The only one I've ever used is Movieberry (www.movieberry.com). It had an old film I really wanted.
I paid $0.99 for 24 hours access and downloaded the film with no problems. I could also have downloaded 19 other films during that 24 hours. HOWEVER I didn't notice that if I didn't cancel during the trial period I would be charged $39 for a month's subscription. I did send them a snotty email asking them to cancel the subscription which they replied to straight away and did cancel but I still had to pay the $39.
So, you could pay $0.99, download a few films and then cancel straight away.

He said pay for films....
You can buy films thru iTunes, or as I prefer to do, rip my existing DVDs onto my hard drive, I use http://handbrake.fr/

They told us to turn off all devices or put them in flight mode if they have it, i was talking to two of the flight attendants while i was on it. It becomes a entertainment device when in flight mode and is no different to a laptop in that sense

Some airlines have a policy to allow phones in 'in flight' mode but Thomas Cook specifically say you cant

I flew to Cyprus recently with Thomas cook and used my I phone constantly and in full view to anyone-no issues.
Also used it flying to Vancouver-again,no issues and no mention of it at all-appears to be a discretionary issue, whether policy is enforced or not!
