Default My mate needs some advice

Hi all

If you have a Company issued laptop and whist at home you like to use it to watch and download ****, do most companies see this as ok?

My concern would be that this laptop is then used on the companies network.

Not me by the way!

But what is most companies view/policy on these things?

Honestly its not me and I would like some info as the person in question deserves all they get.

Initially it was thought it was on the office premises but its at home using their internet but company property which then goes onto the computer network.

Absolutely not, under NO circumstances. Automatic dismissal, I'd say.

I'm not so sure. Seems the circumstances could be different now its found its at home and not at work. Don't think the MD understands what damage it can do having it plugged into the company network. We all know how virus ridden **** websites are.

doesnt matter, any viruses picked up from the **** sites (and trust me, there will be loads) will be propagated throughout the business network when it's plugged into it.

Exactly my thoughts. But need some articles/info so they can make the MD see how serious it is.

What does the company IT policy say about using the laptop at home? How do they know it was him on the PC? Could be his wife, kids etc.

lol yeah that would be it.

Do all threads have to deteriorate this way?

There's a lot more issues behind this and a lot more people deserving of his job if it does go that way which I don't think it will.

Its abuse of company property, they turn their eyes away from browsing the internet, but **** is instant dismissal.

I would imagine it totally depends on the company policy on internet use outside of work. I would say it would be a no no, but I nor anyone else here knows how your company personally stands on this sort of thing.

If the MD knows about it though, and he doesn't see fit to take it further, I'm not sure what you really want to know as it seems the decision has been made.

**** = mis-use of company property = P45. Alot of companies employ a firewall type software and secured VPN connection for accessing internet to ensure the PC only connect to the internet via their proxy servers, which means the traffic will be monitored.

If the company permit users to connect to the internet whilst at home, the company should set out an acceptable use policy as well as user Security operating procedures to which all users must sign up to say they have, read, understood and agree to abide by. I would suggest in the absence of these, the MD knows full well he is on a hiding to nothing, with trying to take this forward.

I have an AUP, system Syops and user syops stored here somewhere if you would like them as a template to implement as a stable door job.
