Yeah, been Camping all my long life ... can't beat it ... join the Camping & Caravanning Club for well maintained, quiet sites.
I've had Tents, Trailer Tents, Caravans, Folding Campers .... brilliant fun for everyone - but, pick your time and site carefully.

Air beds; fantatic. So much better than a roll of foam (which I always seemed to pitch over a rock )
Just get an electric inflator too, as if you have a double matress and manual pump, you'll be too knackered afterwards to do anything on it except sleep.
I also reccomend getting a electric cooler to keep your beer cool When I've been away and we have no main hook up, I take along a 110A/h battery, which will last a long weekend if put on the car inbetween.
Two weeks back we camped in a farmer's field, nothing except a porta-loo (and some WWII tanks ). Fellow (hardcore) campers were disgusted that we had cold beer for the entire weekend.

P.S. Avoid big sites and Bank Holidays they can be atrociously boozy and noisy.

Camping is great, just don't skimp on the sleeping bags, even in summer it can get cold during early hours of morning.remember to check for lumps or rocks before you pitch your tent, most camp sites though will be pritty good with the ground..i remember having sex in a tent and it was effing great...hehe

My first camping trip was to Kielder; It was a load of utter sh*te. When it didn't rain it was a midge fest, there was nothing for miles (as in half an hour drive to the nearest village), not even a pub. It was cold, it rained solid for 5 days including gales. Thin foam carry matt that gave no comfort nor insulation, 1 season sleeping bag, a tent that rained in, and absolutely nothing to do within the vicinity and couldn't pick anything up on the radio, except for Atlantic 252 long wave, which kept playing Eternal songs The only saving grace was the campsite had good hot showers; just as well, as I'd have been hypothermic otherwise.
The day we left, my mates in the other cars didn't see me for dust - didn't drop below 100mph for the entire length of the M6 (this was back in the day when I was young, foolish, sped alot, speed cameras didn't exist and traffic around the Walsall junction was always clear ).
Been camping many times since and had a right laugh - location and kit is key, as well as the weather. A warm 3/4 season sleeping bag + comfy carry matt and a damn good tent is a must. You can't enjoy a holiday if you can't sleep, and you can't sleep if you are cold, uncomfortable, midge bitten, enduring gale force winds, in a tent that rains in.
So forgive me my air bed, 4 season sleeping bag, ear plugs, fly spray, and cool box (beer helps me sleep, cool beer makes it drinkable)

If you do buy an airbed make sure you blow it up before you go on the **** and not after.
And camp near a stream , you can cool your beer in there then.
