So I've just installed a custom rom on my hero
I've been playing around with my hero today and I've installed a custom rom onto it, giving me android 2.1 which isn't actually released on a hero yet, and within this custom rom is a feature allowing me to tether my Internet via wifi. So I can gain Internet on any wifi device through my phone without having to plug anything in. I'm actually posting this from my iPod touch. I could use either an ipad or laptop with my phone to get online. Pretty clever.
The custom rom has made it so much smoother too. Has anybody else on here done this to an android phone?

Imagine changing the type of coal that you run your steam engine on, and then this new coal gives you extra features, like more steam, but from the same engine
Well take that principle and apply it to phone software

www.roothtchero.com
I was a bit weary of doing it at first as i did not want to destroy my phone, but this made it so easy. If you take what it says on that site, but apply it to your phone then it should be ok I'd imagine.
try having a look on www.android.modaco.com
You will find all you need there.
The only thing i cannot find out is how to Overclock the processor.

Typical of Sony to release something really cool and f*** it up with software!

It is great to be able to take a little bit of power back from the phone networks / manufacturers!

So now tell me, where did you get your 2.2 rom from and will it work on my hero?
Oh one question you may know. If i do a nandroid backup, then install another rom, then i don't like it, can i just do a nandroid restore and everything will go back to how it was before?

The sony X10 is an awful phone to use in comparison to a HTC with sense i think. its very hard to navigate and everything seems to just be blue (on the model i was using) and things were not clear at all.

Sooooo regarding your questions... You just found the limit of my knowledge! I usually spend a few days reading before choosing a rom.
Cyanogen seems to cook great roms. I have used a couple and they were always ahead of the official releases. I'm going to start using his on my Nexus soon... just waiting for him to get his act together. Check out http://www.cyanogenmod.com/ You might find something good here.
In my experience I just keep roms on my SD card and swap around them as I feel necessary using the custom recovery I have installed.
SO FAR I haven't lost any apps or files... they just seem to work great for me and some how end up in the right place. Just copy your files first. Haven't used nandroid.
You can always do a complete wipe and start again if you mess up. I partitioned the SD card on my last phone and that seemed to really help things along. Do a Google search and prepare for an evening sat down trying to figure it out!

I'll tell you what I haven't figured out yet... I'm on O2 with a Nexus 1 and the network doesn't recognise the Nexus as one of its own... so MMS images come through tiny.
O2 are predictably rubbish so I'm looking for a way to fool O2 into thinking my handset is a recognised one.
Any ideas?

I flashed "SenseHero 2.1 - B5" onto mine this morning, stunning!
Cant wait for Stickman to sort the kernel out so i can overclock it again
I was so impressed with 2.1-B5 that i donated some cash to the developer
The only flaw i found was that for some reason i am having a hard time setting up my yahoo email account, hotmail setup fine, but the yahoo one is not playing ball, very strange, possible yahoo problem though.
I also flashed the latest radio update, which has meant that i can now actually get a GPS lock while indoors at home, never been able to get a lock at home before, awesome.

I heard it is no goof for Orange customers unless the phone is unlocked or something.
You need the "Overclock Widget" app from the market.
Install, put the widget on a screen, then click on it to delve into the overclocking options, you also need "root" which you may think you currently have, but some roms are not setup for root access for some reason, you also need to have an OC enabled kernel, most devs give a separate kernel update for OC use, just flash it as a zip from the recovery screen.
I put "instant-root.apk" onto the sd card, started it up via a file manager and it sorted out the superuser permissions for me.
