Just updated to Android 2.2 Froyo ...
Just took the plunge tonight and updated the operating system on my Nexus 1 to Froyo.
Here is a link.
I was a bit concerned I might brick it but it was fairly painless. So now I have the latest release with root access.
First impressions are good. Lots of tweaks ... and turn by turn satellite navigation has been enabled!! I keep finding little improvements all the time.

turn by turn was enabled weeks ago with a new google maps you muppet
i've got a Desire so have to wait a bit longer, not sure whether to go for a cooked version of the nexus one upgrade (when someone makes one) or wait for HTC to release it (not the best track record)
Is it noticeably faster? In benchmarks it was like 20x faster at some code!!

Didn't know that about the maps. I had like 20 apps that needed updating for weeks.. I couldn't be bothered.
I wouldn't say 20x faster. It does feel alot more snappy, smooth and responsive. Things move around much more like an iphone. Today is my first day with it so I'll know more tonight.
Installed flash beta as well so I'll see how that works.
Already found some annoyances. Like the volume buttons used to go 'volume > vibrate > mute'. Now they go 'volume > vibrate' and you have to go into the menus to stop it vibrating at night. That's just stupid.
Also the big change of moving application to SD card isn't as great as you might expect. All the applications have to be updated and 'SD card enabled' so none of my existing apps can be moved. Yet. If the dev doesn't want you to move the apps to SD you wont be able to.

yeah, yeah, just read my posts in a hick north Walian accent and they make perfect sense, see?
Anyway, the JIT compiling makes some code 450% faster according to the internets, while other stuff receives a more modest boost. About time Google spent some time optimising rather than chucking out feature after feature lol. The volume thing does sound pretty irritating though.
xda-devs have got semi-working versions of froyo for the desire now so I'll probably take the plunge in the next few days when something more stable is working.

Bump-a-tron.
You Frodo chaps
Can you confirm that upgrading to Froyo makes you lose WMA support?
Messing about with Froyo on my Hero and i cant get them to play, which is annoying as all the CD`s i ripped from my collection are WMA files

I had to search hard for a WMA! I found a Beethoven track in sample music
Anyway it plays fine on mine but I'm currently using CyanogenMod 6.0.0-N1-RC2.
He has a hero version at this link above. The Release Candidate is a little rough around the edges but has loads of extra functionality out of the box and is good enough to use as my daily driver ... although I get the occasional force close now and again.
That said. I had to convert a friends entire library from WMA to MP3 recently. There are loads of free utilities out there. I always go here http://download.cnet.com/windows to get my little utilities because they are checked and rated

Thread hijack - sort of ... Thinking of going Android for my next phone. But want to be able to download contacts/calendar from my PC to the phone WITHOUT going through Google's online *service*. Anyway of doing this with Thunderbird as the email client? Pretty certain that Outlook is covered.

Not sure why you would want to avoid the Google servers... but I suppose you have some good reason??
There are a couple of leads here http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f...rd-sync-21196/ but as the last post on this thread says: "If you're afraid of the cloud, most likely Android is not for you."
IMO once you get over the fact that everything goes through the Google cloud the service is second to none.... for instance:
- I never have to use a cable with my phone (unless I need to charge it). Same for blue tooth.
- I have 2 handsets, one with an American SIM in it because I travel alot. If I add a contact in one phone, it appears in the other and the internet (my gmail account).
- If I answer mails in one phone it appears in the other and the internet.
- If I add contacts or a calendar item on the internet they appear on both phones.
- If I do a complete wipe and install a new ROM, all my contacts, calendar etc appears as soon as the first sync is complete.
I think it is superb.... and a new tweak is out there so you can have handsets associated with multiple Google accounts (I have no experience of this yet) as well as Exchange email.
No more spending days trying to get me address book sorted with the new phone.
If I sound like a proper Googletard... it is because I am. Praise be to Google.

As for address books, my master copy is on my computer. New phone - just synch it with Outlook (at present - but want to shift away totally from Outlook) - one way. Computer to phone. Lose a phone? Don't give a monkey's - just synch the new one with the computer. Nothing lost .... simples.
Ta for the other info.

Have had 2.2 on my Desire for a week or so, made a lot of improvements. Apps 2 SD, wireless hotspot (can get my iPad on the net for free :P) plus ofc the HD video recording. Rooting and applying the ROM was pretty easy, still have the o2 splash screen

OK fair enough. I'm comfortable with the cloud thing though.
Back in the Early Symbian / Nokia days this was always a nightmare... especially when I went to Sony Ericsson and back to Nokia again
You can export from outlook and then import to your gmail account... If I stick with Android I'll never have to do this again! Gmail allows you to export CSV or vCard if you want to bail to another phone.
EDIT: For what it is worth. I thought the same way about privacy as you at first but as soon as I realised how everything fitted together I just though F*** it. It is soooo convenient and works so well...

No probs :P
Although it looks like only unbranded ones this weekend. Should get a update notification on the phone. Those branded, e.g. 02 on the startup screen, might have to wait a few more weeks to get the official update from their provider. Knowing Orange a few more weeks for them to destroy the HTC version by putting their rubbish on it.

I'm looking at upgrading to the Desire (from my HTC HD) as my contract has now expired with Orange.
I am keen to stay with Orange as they are offering me a discount on my £25 a month contract, which is handy. My question is - is it possible to "un-brand" these phones to then get the update, or even unbrand them just to get rid of the Orange crap that might be on it (is the orange stuff that bad)??
Cheers

So in answer to your questions:
I would think yes or possibly even better.
Yes, you would still be with Orange.
