Default BP oil blow out

From the images being displayed live on the BP web site , the cap has been installed on the top of the cut riser , but the oil has not been contained .
The well is still flowing at a massive rate.
I don't know what BP's contingency is now , other than the 2 other wells that are currently scheduled for completion in August (early ) or December (late).
Watch BP's shares go into free fall.

I wonder if there are some marketing boys at BP who are ready to patent any solution to the issue. Then they can try and sell their solutions to other companies who are deep water drilling.

Either that or BP are going to be in major financial trouble, the Americans are going to hit them with the largest bill they can think of.

I hope they do come through this. The Americans have been going way over the top here. More of a hindrance than a help.

Maybe they want to eliminate competition for their own companies?

I agree, I think its clear that since the company is not American there is no bad news in giving them the largest bill they can think of.

Which of course means that the American companies could possibly stand to gain......capitalism at its best (worst).

I have been watching Fox News from USA since this blow out happened . They are really doing a number on BP and fail to recognise that the drilling contractor is American , all the crew will be American , the procedures will have been approved by Americans , the equipment will be American made , the safety audit would have been conducted by Americans - Yet BP are getting some serious flak. Oh yes BP are listed on the American stock exchange so have a lot of interested American investors - Tony Hayward is in their gun sights . They want him real bad.

Putting the cap on is only stage 1 of the plan. So we need to wait if they can complete the job and stormy weather doesn't help. dl

I mentioned on another thread that the contractor who did all the installation is a US company.

Wonder why they don't mention that when they shout about BP?

This is a technical briefing from BP. Really interesting stuff with some great graphics.

I couldn't believe those shears were 18ft long by 9ft high. I guess it's hard to get perspective under the water.

The scaremongering press is saying the same thing could well happen in the North Sea.

If BP shares really do into freefall and we lose BP - a lot of people on here will have significantly devalued pensions.

£1 in every £7 in your pension comes from BP dividends!

The North Sea is nowhere near as deep as that Leslie, divers could do the majority of the work across here.

According to the latest reports the containment cap is retrieving 10,000 barrels of oil per day with more to come. There is a second part of the solution that is being implemented over the next week to capture even more.

If it works, watch BP shares rise.

Interesting article at the Mail of Sunday where certain "Merkins" are making a fortune out of compo and skimming.

Maybe when the dust, er, mud, er, oil settles, nice Mr Obama might want to apologise to "British Petroleum" (sic) for all of his harsh words?

1200 ft deep maximum vs 5000 ft at the blow-out site in the GoM.

1) I could see an argument that says no drilling allowed at depths that exceed depths that cannot be reached by divers in suitable pressure gear.

2) In a normal deep sea operation what does oil company do when oil runs out on a particular reservoir? Do they leave the up-pipe or is it removed?

3) Anyone have any more details of the up-pipe itself? I used to lay pipes (underground) and would be fascinated to know what actual pipe is. I assume all welded steel which is assembled on ship and fed down and 6" - 9" diameter but I may be completely wrong on this

He was trying to get a bit of political capital because he has been heavily criticised in the US for not doing anything to stop the problem. Not only that he keeps blaming Britain when BP is now an international company. It has been reported that he dislikes Britain and the British anyway.

He had been advocating more drilling for oil in the Gulf before all this happened as well!

It was reported that it goes back to his grandparents in Africa and is tribal.
