Default Home insurance

Just had a polite meeting at Halifax with their mortgage advisor. Nowt to worry about, just a meeting to see how we're getting along and if anything can be advised upon.

Lovely woman but as usual pushy with the home insurance (which is up for renewal soon). I entertained her on quoting for buildings & contents on our house and LOL'ed when I got the quote... £655

I said politely there is no way I'm paying that but you're welcome to print off the details so when I get a better price online I can compare the nitty gritty.

Just spent 5 minutes on Money Supermarket (which admittedly included another 5 minutes working out how much the house would cost to rebuild). Buildings and contents cover... £195.09

Double checked everything was right, voluntary excesses were £0 for buildings and £100 for contents, contents were valued correctly, correct details for locks, alarms etc. Yep everything was correct. Same company who used to do my Scoobs car insurance too so I know they're reliable aswell come claim time - also including accidental damage too.

3x as much - where do Halifax get these prices from The MOST expensive one on the list was £704.

I think a polite phonecall to mention I've saved £450+ in 10 minutes may push her over the edge She was nice to me (but no coffee though).

I have used Liverpool & Victoria for years and just over £200. Up to £500k rebuild and plenty of contents and reasonable excesses.

Is your house on a beach in the Gulf of Mexico?

Don't forget to see if you can get cashback too if buying online, use Quidco, Topcashback, etc.

They assume people can't be bothered to shop around each year, so just renew. Same with car insurance.

How did you guess

Nope, mid terrace, decent enough postcode, 100 years old this year.

Not like you to help me out

But I'll definitely look into the cashback thing, never thought to.

Yep always shop around / change providers every year. For the sake of ten minutes work on the Internet can usually cut a few £ off the renewal and then even if I can't beat it can usually get cash back by changing companies. TYpically save £40-50 per renewal

Halifax tried it on when we took a mortgage out. They tried to convince my wife that she had to take out their buildings insurance along with the mortgage. Luckily she was working at a solicitors at the time doing convanacing so in no polite terms she told them to stick it.
