Default Sky HD - Self set-up

I've been toying with the idea about upgrading to Sky HD for a while now and I've noticed that you can get a free HD box with no installation fee if you take the "Self set-up" option.

http://www.sky.com/shop/supertelly/h...to-supertelly/

Does anyone know what's involved in the self set-up?

If it's simple enough then I think I will go for it and save myself £60, which in turn will pay for 6 months HD subscription.

I've just noticed that the installation has dropped to £30 quid now, not £60.

as long as u have the dual/quad LNB(2 cables to your sky box) it should be plug and play, the installation part used to be if you only had 1 cable from your dish to the sky box afaik.

plug box in, put new card in. you may need to phone sky to get them paired but that should be about it. If your dish is old it may need upgrading but probably not likely.

Self setup is fine if you're moving from sky+
i.e. have you already got two cables coming into the house from the dish?

If so - then wee buns
If not - then if you fancy installing a quad LNB and running another cable then go for it.

I've got Sky+, can't say I've taken much notice of what comes from the dish I'm pretty sure it's only one cable though.

are you replacing your old Sky+ box with a SKY HD box? if so just swap the two feeds. you will need to ring sky and get your viewing card changed to an HD subscription. they will link your viewing card number to an HD subscription. if you wand to use your old sky box as a free to air box then you need to change to a quad feed lnb. and run another 2 cables from the dish to the FTA box.

new SKY HD boxes only have HDMI connections on them AFAIK. old thompson boxes had both component video and an HDMI sockets. you will need to make sure your telly is HD compliant i.e. has got HDMI sockets.

Oh an another thing, SKY are a bunch of robbin bar stewards. I paid full wack for my orginal HD box. when i asked for another HD subscription they stung me again for £200. add to that i had to fork out another £10/month. they also wanted another £30 to resite the surplus SKY+ box to another room. They had to supply an octofeed LNB though.

So... I upgraded from Sky + to Sky + HD, I still have the old Sky + box, is it just a case of running two cables from the dish to the other box, and that can be used as normal sky +. Maybe in a bedroom etc.

cookie,

yes, but you may need to change the LNB on the dish to a quad output. sky+ will not work unless you have a valid multiroom sub. it works fine as a free to air box though.

I rang them & said I had a letter saying free installation.. think it was for new customers not existing ones but they never questioned it and around came a man in van a week later & did the install for free.
