Default Off to Edinburgh - What to do?

I'm going to Edinburgh on Friday with the missus, and will be coming home Sunday morning.

What can people recommend to do, where to go, where to eat etc?

We will be going to:
The Real Mary Kings Close: http://www.realmarykingsclose.com/

The Castle: http://www.edinburghcastle.gov.uk/

The Royal Yatch Britannia: http://www.royalyachtbritannia.co.uk/

What else is worth a visit?

Cheers

The Dome is a nice place to go to for lunch. Try the Club Room, for something light, or the Grill Room for a larger meal. It is usually busy but the decor and food is worth the effort to go. Also it's not to far from Waverley Station.

You've got the Real Mary Close on your list, it's a great tour, but again can be very busy.

Other than that Princess Street Gardens are lovely to walk through and you can see if Scott Monument is open.

Then you have the Grass Market for drinks, as well pubs on Rose street.

Although I live in Aberdeen I go to Edinburgh a fair bit.
Eating wise, my favourite is the Witchery / Secret Garden on the Royal Mile for top class dining.
Also the restautrant at Prestonfield House Hotel is superb.
Down in Leith there is Fishers which is also really good.

I've not been there for about 5 years, but I visited the road where Ewan McGregor slid over the car bonnet, in the opening scenes of Trainspotting.

The castle's military museum was interesting. Oh, and they have a cannon. But if you know nothing of it, I'll leave it as a surprise.

I also got a bus to a local beach and had a swift pint there, followed by pumping the arcade machine with coins until I managed to win an Eeyore, which eClaire still has.

If you find anywhere nice, then please mention it when you get back, as I'm thinking of taking my girlfriend away for her birthday, she was born at RAF Lossiemouth but then moved to England at the age of two and hasn't been back since.

Obviously a man that knows his restaurants, probably the three best known restaurants in edinbugh there, never been to any but Fishers and the witchery are rated among the best in the uk.

Try making sure you are around the princess street area around 13:00, let me know how you get on ??!!

Well I went!!

I did the Castle, The Real Mary Kings Close, Royal Yacht Britannia, and the Whiskey Tour.

We also ate in the Witchery  and a place on Bow Street/The Grass Market called Mussel and Steak. Both were some of the nicest food I've ever eaten!!

None of it was cheap, but reading some reviews on the net the Whiskey Tour for example didn't get some good reviews, which I'm not sure why. There was a bit of a cheesy ride at the beginning, but then there was a 'Smelling session' where you learn't where east type of whiskey was from etc, then a small tasting session and a look at the worlds biggest collection of whiskey, then at the end (Gold Tour) we got 4 different types of whiskey to taste.
