Default Should I wait to upgrade to the next iPhone

Engadget says the next iphone is due to be announced june 22.

My contract is up June 3 and I can upgrade from May 3.

So, when would the next iphone actually be available ? 3 months after?

Will it be bug ridden? should I upgrade now and then get an iPhone 4G v2 in 18months time?

what say you all?

I think the iPhone 4G wil be out by august at the earliest.

Depends if you want to wait i guess. Is your current phone in a good state?

I would wait. I've been reading lots and lots of speculation about the new iPhone and it looks like it'll be almost as good as the latest crop of Android smart phones etc Seriously though, my contract ends about the same time and although I'm 99.9% sure that I'm going to go for an Android handset ('Desire' at present is my favourite but there'll no doubt be a zillion new ones by then) I want to wait and see what the new iPhone is like.

Depending on what you read it'll have a much better AMOLED screen as well as a better camera. By comparison the current iPhone 3GS is positively outdated by current smart phone standards (and yes, I know it has a fabulous OS but that's not the point ) so I'll definitely be waiting. I read yesterday during my hour-long daily study into smart phones that the new iPhone will be coming out in April, May and June Specualtion seems rife that a corporate event is booked from 28th June to 2nd July at San Francisco's Moscone Center. June 28th happens to coincide with the three year anniversary of the iPhone's launch AppleInsider | WWDC 2010, iPhone announcement rumored for June 28-July 2

I would suggest if you currently have a Iphone 3G then wait for the latest phone to come out, can't see it being a big enough jump to a 3GS with a new one around the corner

I'm very happy with my Blackberry 9700 but the new top end HTC phones interest me. saying that I don't really rate the current iPhone but I think the next one could be a great phone depending on if they push the spec. It's making me think about holding off until I at least know the spec of it

I'd wait.

Current iPhone does not multi task with 3rd party apps and this is annoying. Apple of couse say it was designed like this rather than admit crappy OS. Will the iPad have the same problem?

This is not because of the crappy OS, they actually went out of their way to make it not multi-task. Yes the iPad will have the same 'feature'. And it's unlikely it will be lifted in the next iPhone.

It is apparent that the next iPhone will be a much bigger jump from the old 3g or 3gs, than it was from a 3g to a 3gs... I guess this is because of the huge advance in competitor smart phones.

If it was me i would wait for a little while as lots more phones are due out over the next few months. Nokia are bringing out something a bit special soon too. We had a visit from the nokia rep and she wasn't aloud to tell us too much but it will have the new linux OS but it has been updated lots, and there will be lots of apps for it by then, and it will also feature a good camera, and nokia have always had good cameras on their phones.

If your GF is desperate for your 3G tell her to wait

I'm on a 24 month business contract with 02 with upgrade at 12 months which will be mid may.

Will o2 let me wait until the new iphone is out to upgrade and honour the 24 month contract length (e.g 14 months on my current 3G 8g and 10 months on the new one) or will they insist the new phone is tied to a 'new' 12 month contract?

No point asking o2, they will tell me I have to upgrade instantly as they will be wanting rid of the old phones

Tell the gf to be somewhat more patient or bugger off and get their own iPhone.

There are rumors of a new phone, which makes sense given therelease schedule we had seen in the past. Apple will not want to detractfrom the ipad launch so will be keeping mum about the phone

wether we see just an os update or a phone and new OS is anyones guess. The SDK for the ipad went final last night and so here would probably need to be another update if the iPhone OS is to be upgraded

I have seen rumors about third party multitasking being in the next OS but there is no real proof as yet

bottom line, if you cabwait until mid to late June to see ifthere is an announcement then that is what I would do, and then make a decison

My contract for my 3G iphone is up any day now. I'm going to wait and see if anything gets announced in June before I decide about upgrading. There's not enough updated with the 3GS to make me want to sign up for one just yet.

It's worth getting the newest iphone even if you want another phone as the resale will be much better and could possibly pay for your whole years contract in some cases

When someone starts to gloat about the limited multi tasking on the iPhone I ask them what multitasking they currently enjoy. There's never an answer. Internet forums are a different matter of course, google helps these people a lot.

Right now I'm listening to my iPhones iPod, typing on a forum, mail is being checked, I'm signed into around 4 instant messaging services, several apps will notify me if I need to know anything and my device is running as fast as it always does with unrivaled reliability. What else exactly do you need to do?

I'd hold on for the next iPhone, unlike HTC and Nokia Apple products have a long shelf life, your 3g is still a great device.

well said Jack.

when your phone (OS) providers say your phone is multi tasking, they probably aren't - behind the scenes the OS will be swapping processes in and out to give you the appearance of multi tasking. At least apple admit this.

OK, I'm nearly sold. But will it nip out and pick up my Chinese takeaway...?

PS. Can you do all that ^^ whilst flying around power cables and lamposts in the desert?

Hey Sal

Ive just ordered an HTC Desire There's a thread on Pistonheads: a few guys have got these now and they reckon they're the dogs danglies. Even some who have been avid iphone applettes ...until the Desire. They really do rate it.

I will let you know when I get mine

Not sure about the take away but I do use the iPhone to create track logs of my flights. I poached that flight in the desert from under the noses of the Jordanian Military, I was more concerned about being escorted away than where I'd been.

What? It won't get the takeaway? My Nokia will not only pick up my takeaway but will also fill my car up with petrol en route. Flaming iPhones

Tell me, how does one go about poaching a flight from under the noses of the Jordanian military and NOT get escorted away? Does your iPhone have an anti-escort-away app?

Exactly Sal, there's an app for that!! Not doing it again, we now have Jet Fighters doing low level fly-bys every hour or so and the Prince is in town.

I can now say that I've soared the lowest ridge on earth at about 300 meters below sea level which is quite something.
