As the song goes.

Could someone explain to a simple lad like me how USA and Russia reducing their nuclear weapons to "only" 1500 each is going to make the world a safer place?

If that lot were used you could take out the world and half the solar system at the press of a few buttons....

And I can't see how this gives them any extra credibility when, for example, asking Iran to stop their weapons programme "Dear Mr Iranian President, we have cut back our stocks to a paltry 1500 so it can be done "

I'd have thought that say a dozen each would be more than enough? USA would prepare a list such as: -

Beijing 1
North Korea 1
Moscow 1
Iran 2
Rest of Middle East 1 big one
Wales 1
Sarah Palin's backyard 1
Spares just in case 2

Russia would have a similar list plus a few extra for those pesky satellite states of theirs that no one can spell

UK wouldn't be allowed any because they can't afford them and anyway would leave their whereabouts on a laptop in a taxi soon enough.

Wouldn't that all be safer?

Its politicians who start wars. How well do you trust modern day politicians? How certain could you be that the others have binned their own nukes?

Best to agree enough weapons each to assure "MAD" should anyone be so stupid to set a war off.

The US/Russia reducing nuclear weapons stock means they can sell them;

The US will see theirs to Israel and Pakistan etc. and Russia will sell theirs to Iran and Korea
