Google and privacy.
I use Google like most people, without thinking too much about it. Just more so recently.
Firstly, it turns out that Al Gore is one of their *special advisors*, which I guess from someone who invented the internet is a fairly benevolent gesture ... [Look up recent claims of NOT finding 'climategate' articles - if you can ..... ].
Secondly I saw this article ... Google chief: Only miscreants worry about net privacy ? The Register and the quote from Google CEO Eric Schmidt "...If you have something that you don't want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn't be doing it in the first place...".
Sounds to me like government claims whenever they restrict our liberties a bit more *for our own safety*. The claim is "if you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear". Yeah, right ....
Anyway, thought I'd also post this for those interested ... Turning off personalisation : Personalised Search Results - Google Accounts Help
But note the bit at the bottom "... Note: If you've disabled search customisations, you'll need to disable it again after clearing your browser cookies; clearing your Google cookie turns on history-based customisations ..."
I've enabled private browsing (Firefox) and 'blocked' cookies from google.
I'll be b*ggered if I'm going to make it easy for them to track me ....

I use Firefox with NoScript, Adblock Plus and Better Privacy addons on a Linux OS behind a firewalled router. Although it doesn't block everything, it certainly blocks most of the sites that try to grab your info.

This makes no sense, private browsing in Firefox prevents information from being recorded on your computer. It does not make you anonymous and Google will still have a record of everything you would have done if you hadn't used that function.

Read my link. "... If you aren't signed in to a Google Account, your search experience will be customised based on past search information linked to a cookie on your browser ...".
I know they can track ip addresses etc but I did say I was just making it harder for them ....
