Anyone into telescopes or stargazing??
It's my sons birthday next month and he has asked for a telescope, he will be turning 10. Has anybody got any suggestions for what to be looking for as I haven't the first clue what to be looking for. It would obviously need to be good enough to see some interesting things for him without being overly complicated to operate.
Any ideas?

taken from a website, used to pass this on my way to work. might be worth a phone call.
There is a well established and popular Astronomy Resource Centre near our Parish beside the Rawalpindi Nursery, Main Road, Hawkwell, SS5 4JH. They have powerful telescopes and knowledgable amateur astronomers who are highly skilled in planet- and star-gazing. They observe, track and record planets, moons, stars, nebulae, binaries and the occasional comets. For details on membership, taking part in research and for free Observation Evenings, call Royston Dean, Telephone 01702 206244.

Jessops do a very good low cost one, and Aldi were selling a bargain piece of kit recently, some stores may still have them in stock.

cookie, do you live at a dark site? or in the town with soduim discharge street lights? if so best bet is 10x50 binos. unless you live in cornwall a telescope will be a waste because of light pollution. when I got back to living in the town i got rid of my big telescopes and bought a set of bresser (meade) 10x50s. the two telescopes i had (10" mak and 12" newtonian) where useless as they just gather light from surrounding area. i found i got more enjoyment out of the binos.

Only advice, don'y buy cheap tat. It'll only spoil the experience and maybe put him off for life.
Much better spending a bit more and then selling it on if he looses interest.
