Default Question for the Japanese speakers, workers..

"ame futte ji katamaru"

What is the translation of that?

A friend is in the middle of a tattoo design. So just need accurate clarification. I will of course be checking other sources.

A Japanese expression written phonetically in latin characters (which isnt Romaji)? Thats going to be crap no matter what it means!

If its not in Kanji or Hiragana then itll be meaningless rubbish, and if it is in ideographs then wholl understand outside Japan anyway?

雨降って地固まる。

Adversity builds character
Literally translated means the ground gets hard after rain, but above translation is pretty much spot on.

My Japanese colleague suggested, " Oo nata wa Manko" (sp). Apparently very rude.

It doesn't translate too well into English but Yoza and Rikimaru have got as close as might be possible.
Ame = Rain, Futte = Now (At this time) and makes the ground firm/hard.

Doesn't mean jack-**** in English though!

For anyone who is interested, here are two of mine.

They are Celtic Shields and signify "forever protected."

One on each shoulder.

To give an idea of size they are 8 inches in diameter, and took 3 1/2 hours each, two sittings.

The right hand side one has a raised mole slap bang in the middle, the guy tattooing said if it was to fall on a shaded part he would have had to leave it un-tattooed.

There is a flaw though, I laughed at something said in the room, and I laugh with my shoulders .....un-repairable, its a small line running off an outer triangle.

{RHS, 11 O'clock.}

My son calls them Dustbin Lids..
