They get their info thro the PAYE tax office. You get a letter if you leave employment asking what you are up to. I think you escape if you work overseas. dl

How do you all afford those backbacking trips to Australia if you only have part time jobs at McDonalds?

I hate they way the student loan deductions are done

inland revenue take the money, banks it for a year to earn interest then they pay the student loan company at the end of the year.

Whilst the IR is earning your interest the student loan company is charging you interest on your loan

You start paying it the following tax year, well I did. I graduated in June 2006 and made my first payment at end of April 2007.

They will only start taking the money off you once you have a job and are earning over £15K or £17K (think it changed recently). And then it is around 8% or 9% of your wage after tax and NI has been deducted.

The real cheek about it though is that your borrowed amount will be accruing interest the whole time so by the time you come to start paying it you will owe loads more than you borrowed. By increasing the threshold it’s not to help you it’s to help the government who are struggling to subsidise the student loans

If you are contracting they cant deduct anything, only when you go permanent with a company.

Don't get me wrong, paying them back is not a problem, but taking £100 from my wage just like that .. I had that money planned.. we have bills to pay, child care ... savings .. all things that need to be taken into consideration ...

Is that it now, will they take £100 a month ? or will they take more when I earn more as my wage depends on how busy I am ..

The more you earn the more you pay, tells you all about it here:- How Student Loan repayments are worked out (courses starting from 1998) : Directgov - Education and learning
