Default Dishwashers - need a new one - any advice?

Guys (and girls), our 13 year old Bosch dishwasher has finally given up. We had a couple of jokers out to fix it a while back, they took it to bits and I didn't hear any more for a month, so I thought 'I can Fix that'.

How hard can it be?

Anyway, it sort of worked for a few weeks but the spray bars weren't rotating so I figured there must be a hose kinked. Pulled it our last night. Now it won't wash.

I don't seem to be able to find anyone any good in our area, so I'm just going to buy a new one.

We've always had Bosch, and they've always been excellent, but they're a good coule of hundred quid more than some of the hotpoint / indesit etc.

Are they worth the extra?

Yes they are, is a short answer. AEG are also pretty good.

Can I suggest you look on the Bosch site for what NEW models are available, then do a search on pricerunner, dealtime, amazaon heck, even e-bay, for older models, (but still new, ie: superseded)? You can save a few quid that way.

I bought a Bosch one in the end. It was more expensive but had the convenience of being in a local store that would deliver the same afternoon and used less water and power than others.

Our one at the French house even uses less POWDER than the others.........but still produces an excellent wash.

Miele if you can afford one, Bosch if you can't.

Got a Bosch at home and it's been good so far (2 years). Indesit, Hotpoint, Hoover, etc. = avoid.

Get a Bosch or one with the same noise value. My mate's Bosch is far quieter than my Hotpoint.

Only spraybar issue I've had so far is food/crud build up on the bearing (plastic) made the bottom bar stiff to turn. Thing just pops off and on with 1/4 turn of the nut though so that's easy to sort out.

I had a Hotpoint one for just over six years, top bit of kit, i thought, very reliable and washed very well, bought a new one (Hotpoint again, silver to match the washing machine !! not my decision obviously !), lots of flashy lights, more programs than you can shake a stick at, but it doesn't wash for s**t.
Moral of the story, don't judge a book by its cover. And as said above buy a Miele or Bosch, and don't worry is doesn't match the other appliances !

Just got a Bosch Classix , brand new with a tiny dent in it for £165 from elekdirect.co.uk

You can't even see the dent now it;s installed, but it would have quite easily popped out had i been arsed to undo the 2 screws that hold the panel on..

There's some real bargains out there in the graded appliance market! I got a brand new Hotpoint Washer for less than half proce whilst i was at it. All with full manufacturers warranty

Have to admit, our Whirlpool was the cheapest branded built-in dishwasher we could find, and its been absolutely solid. Mate has the model up and thats been just as good. Never had that much opinion of them before due to previous links with Philips (nothing to do with Philips now), but I can't knock it.

Take a careful/cynical look at the Bosch: They share their white goods with other brands. Siemens being the main Bosch clone (same goes for their fridges and washing machines - our fridge-freezer is branded as Balay - and its identical to the more expensive Bosch). Something to bear in mind when forking out extra just for the brand.

Easy way to tell is look inside some in the showroom, the design of spray arms, racks, dispensers etc. You'll quickly find that some brands have exactly the same internal components!

It's true that the Bosch and Siemens household appliances are produced by a company founded as a joint 50/50 venture between Bosch and Siemens. Neff is also one of their brands.

So it's not a clone, it's made by the same company.

The thing is, I don't think you can go to wrong with the above mentioned (Bosch,Siemens and Neff) there all good makes and should perform very well in the domestic environment.

There are a few other that are part of the bosch group too, but I forget the brands (its bad enough with Zanussi being Electrolux which is also AEG, amongst others).

Clone is probably not the best choice of words, as it would imply that the lesser brand being inferior, when its not the case, as you say its the same company.

I know Balay is one more Bosch/Siemens/Neff that "shares" common products, but thats a Spanish home market brand, so not available in the UK. (Pity as they are considerably cheaper than the same spec Bosch - which essentially is the same machine with a different badge and facia)

Bought Hotpoint dishwasher and washing machine dirt cheap as I knew a guy who worked there. Both have been pretty poor (but not awful). Both have needed 1 repair in 4 years and the dishwasher hinge is held together with a nail. The dispenser doesn't work either, I have to chuck the tablet in mid-cycle. Thinking again, I'd say it was crap.

Was told by the repair man 'buy a Bosch next time'. And I will.

My washer repairman told me to steer clear of Merloni Group appliances, Hotpoint, Hoover, Indesit, Ariston to name but a few.

And he WORKS for them

I have a 2-bob Indesit so flimsy it needed fastening to the carcase to stop it wobbling.... expected the worst, but it's nearly four years old and still doing well !

I thought the order of quality for white goods was Miele, Siemens then Bosch.

I find that the warranty usually plays some factor in what I choose as it suggests the company believe in their own quality.

Miele are 5/10 Years , Siemens are 2-5 Yrs and Bosch are 2 Yrs.

Everything else is usually only 1 yr (which is what you get from the retailer anyway) - Says a lot....

I've got a Bosch Diswasher / Washing Machine + Fridge Freezer, Siemens Condensing Dryer - No Problems in 4 Years.
Miele is excellent, but you can usually buy 2 Bosch machines for the cost of 1 Miele.

Warranty is probably the biggest component of a product's price IMO.

Its all about how lucky you feel.

Taking into account products that share and use identical internal component with each other; One may come with a 1yr warranty, one may come with a 5yr one. But obviously the latter is more expensive; what your buying is the insurance moreso than a better product, as both could contain the same flaws and have the same (unofficial) MTBF. This is what I belive to be true for Bosch et al. All good products, just with varying warranty packages.

But then on the flip side, some manufacturer groups "could" source cheaper components for their lesser brands. However, even the likes of Hotpoint/Ariston/Creda/Indesit share common components with each other, but then their top of the range brands are not that good - just they have a better warranty.

I darnt mention Miele, as they are the exception. AFAIK they don't share components with anyone else, such bespoke manufacturing methods denotes a higher manufacturing price. Combine that extra cost with a lower expected sales output, also means each unit has to cost more to cover business overheads.

(Inccidentally I have 3 second hand Miele units to fill the one house with, I know one was previously a returned/repaired unit due to a faulty salt dispenser, the others were just repossesed units that used to be on finance. Can't comment on their performance, as I don't get to use them ).

Another vote for Neff.

Had one in the flat for 10 years before we moved and nothing had ever broken or worn out.

On every second night on average, so about 1,800 washes.

A new Neff going into the house this week.
