Victor bomber almost takes off by accident..
Hero pilot averted air show disaster after co-pilot hit throttle of WWII bomber by mistake | Mail Online
Nice to see the Mail have been doing their research, and seem to think the Victor is a WW2 bomber...
Looks like it had a lucky escape however - basically being taxied by an engineer and ex-pilot, and actually took off when the engineer hit the throttle by accident! Would have been interesting if they'd left it too late to abort the take-off!...
I wasn't aware there were any Victors left which could run, but seems there are actually 2!

So that's the excuse they finally came up with is it
I have to say though, that in the original footage it didn't sound to me like the throttles had been accidentally pushed wide open

AFAIK the "flyboys" have one at Elvington.
Ow nasty noisy Subaru's on a day out, VS four huge jet engines, running "for a laugh" on a Sunday, just for fun of course....

heh, looks like the hero of the hour has signed in to comment below the article.
Spends most of his time correcting the inaccuracies though!

Very poor write up by the reporter anyway. How can the "engineer" accidentally be described as hitting "the throttle" when it has 4-one for each engine make the aircraft get airborne. It looked as though full poke was applied at the beginning of the run anyway. Why was the aircraft "rotated" to a high nose attitude just before it left the ground? If he did not want to get airborne, why did the pilot not close the throttles himself? I imagine the aircraft was light on fuel which would make it liable to take off on a high power run, especially it the aircraft was rotated to a nose high attitude.
The drift to the left of the runway was due to a strong crosswind and they were very lucky to get off as lightly as they did.
The whole incident seems difficult to explain away to me. it was supposed to be a slow taxi down the runway for a photo shoot anyway.

On the news the old boy ex pilot who landed it said the co-pilot opened it up to run it up to 100 knots/kmh/mph whatever!! But failed to throttle back when the pilot told him to, apparently he just froze and the plane kept accelerating and eventually took off. The ex RAF pilot on board had to land it himself. He said he was scared that the air speed would scrub off and the engines would stall causing it to fall out the sky but obviously it didn't and he landed it ok. This was at Bruntingthorpe apparently.

And I wouldn't worry about the engines stalling, its the wings stalling that would have really ruined his day. Landing on grass or not, he really did get that aircraft out of a very nasty pickle.

What utterly **** poor reporting
"Accidental: A bystander videotapes the moment the Victor bomber took-off at an air show when a civilian co-pilot hit the throttle button by mistake"
Button????
then the report contradicts itself.

Why were they using all the power to do a slow taxi run down the runway anyway?

Any pilot with any kind of experience would actually realise the moment that the throttles were not closed that the other man had not followed his instruction. He would not be likely to sit there until the aircraft lifted off rather than chop the throttles right back himself! You would have to be in a trance to do that!
