As my abilities as a man are in question in another thread I may as well embarrass myself here too.
I'm building a model railway and one my trains is based on the oil refinery train that goes to Milford Haven. I actually want to find out the time it passes through our station so I can see which loco is pulling the train and model the loco.
Its a loadhaul class 60 but not sure which number.
I recently commented to my wife that I wanted to "trainspot" this train and she didn't stop laughing for quite a while.

I'm seeing some parallels here....
Trainspotters : Stands by a track watching trains go by.
Scoobynet : Stands by a track watching cars go by.
Trainspotters : Enjoy the sound of locomotive engines.
Scoobynet : Enjoy the sound of Subaru engines.
Trainspotters : Congratulate themselves when they reach a milestone of collected numbers.
Scoobynet : Congratulate themselves when they reach a milestone of posts.
Frightening

It is actually THE SAME!!
You should hear them talking about you lot at Crewe Station ... with your KockLinks, your 'special' Oil Changes, your 'Super' petrol, your £650 Re-Maps, your rather gay Gold Wheels .....
They think I'm great, of course!

Before you know it someone will start an internet forum called trainynet and will be run by a large red lobster who will have a hose and cart not a train
Then people will start posting pictures up claiming theirs is better than everyone elses etc etc etc

We're rail enthusiasts, not trainspotters All proper blokes like trains
Yeah, i was hooked between about 13 and 16. I never actually stood at the end of platform 5 at Crewe like the neds, but i was nicked by British Transport Police at York, slept on a bench on Derby station when i was 15, saw the final roar of the Deltics, woke up in the Highlands on the Fort William sleeper and much more besides. These days you wouldn't dream of giving your kid that much freedom, but back then, it was a lot of fun, i'd readily admit. These days, i'll give the sidings a second glance, but that's about it, they don't make 'em like they used to, as the saying goes

If the bridge is still there, try lying on the deck, facing down the line when one of those comes through.
Bridge in question is the one over Coed-Cae lane level crossing just down from Pontyclun. Though I'd guess that they're speed limited these days 'cos the station is now operating again.
Dunno what the beef is about, unless it's 'cos it's a diesel.
2250 HP at each end, turbos, 'healthy' exhaust plumes and noise, tints on the windows of the cars... And not being banned for doing over 100mph in the open countyside.

You could sort of understand it in the days when there were fewer of them of them and had some kind of individuality
Same youd look out for a one off/working boat amongst the sea of tupperware

From my days of living by Earlestown Station and about a mile from the Vulcan Foundry, I've been hooked on trains for exactly the same reason I like cars and bikes. The sound Class 37s, 40s and 56s still takes me back to my childhood days.
What's not to like about a V16 250 litre turbocharged 2000bhp engine?

Never was a spotter, but my step-father was, and he's made a handsome income out of the pictures he took on eBay believe it or not.
Always been into railways, OO gauge in my youth, and have a "coffee table" N gauge layout. My favourite British locos were the Deltic, class 37 and 47, wasn't really into steam, but the Evening Star 5F impressed me.
