I dont see the attraction of standing at stations waiting for them to go by. But some of the American and Japanese trains look pretty mean!

I dunno, the 1980-summat train crash test on a nuclear waste flask, albeit a new one, "Peak" class 110 ton locomotive with 3 class 5 (I think) 10 ton cars in tow at 110mph was pretty impressive to watch.

Always good seeing a 44 or a 46 at St Pancras instead of the ubiquitous 45s

Yeah it was a class 46, it would have been a "past best date" loco anyway...

YouTube - Nuclear Flask Train Crash Test - BBC News 1984

Still impresses people I show the clip to.

Spent my mid teens on the trans pennine route riding behind the 45's and 46's, the noise they made was nowhere near as good as the Class 40's though. They were good times, although it seems a bit of a sad way to spend your time when you look back!

The most striking thing I recall from this era, is the media. Exagerating all the way to the bank!

Definitely wasn't sad at the time Was on the last Manchester-Skeggy and back behind 40181 in the front "compo", those were the days! I think there are some clips of that on Youtube somewhere. Class 50's along the sea front between Dawlish and Teignmouth on my summer holidays too, great times!

Packed it all in when I discovered girls though

My favourite pic of that crash test is this one:

The thing on fire at the top of the pic is the power set (engine and generator) flying free.

in the clip of the first link the bridge in the background is where loads of people commit suicide and cause havoc with train delays etc. i can sort of see why people like trains well the old ones anyway the new ones are all the same to me.

LOL it was the bullcrap leftist, greenie crap that lead to the test in the first place. What happened afterwards was, and still is, irrelavent. The fact that the industry actually set it up and did it was awesome. But even still, the leftist greenie bullcrappers *STLL* complained...like "It's was a new, unused, flask. A used one will be more prone to damage.". Clearly it's all bullcrap, but still, IMO, an impressive test.

For the most boring 8 minutes of your life:

YouTube - Longest train officially in the world

Impressive stats, though: 682 wagons, 8 locos, 100000 tonnes and over 4.5 miles long.

Hey Telboy, I know exactly where you're coming from, from 79-82 was in the same boat.

Nightrider with the blue carriage lights to Edinburgh for 15 quid return lol.

Saw a hell olf a lot of the UK due to that hobby, never forget the trip up the Settle and Carlisle line, stunning, even as a young teenager you appreciated the beauty.

Walking about Polmadie, Haymarket, Motherwell, Old Oak Common, Stratford, Finsbury Park, Toton, Tinsley, Gateshead, Swindon and Donny works etc etc many I have forgotten I doubt you could just walk into one of those places nowadays.

I got a train to Norwich a couple of years back and noticed Stratford had gone, the place was huge, felt like a part of my youth had vanished and FP is a small housing estate now, Deltic Heaven that place.

Diesels ruled, it was the raw sound. Being at KX with thousands of others as the final Deltic pulled in as 15 year old, Peaks, 40's 50's, 47's 56's, went crap when everything was electrified.

Neds or not at least we weren't out battering old ladies thieving and so on and we got to see a bit of the UK.

*****, snakebite and black, snooker halls and Xr3i's soon took over

Fond memories of some great adventures though

Casey Jones half ponder anyone

The Greenpeace claim that the CEGB arranged for the locomotive's power unit to be unbolted prior to the test so that it would fly free in the crash made me laugh

Obviously they were fully aware of what happens to an unsecured internal combustion engine when full power is applied
