Default Amazing way to speed up Scoobynet!

Sorry, the BBS mangled my post. Anyway, after trawling the code.
The site seems to reference many external sites before it will load the page properly.

Simply add the following text (in this text file) into your HOSTS file on your PC (located in ..\system32\drivers\etc) and it'll stop the site trying to get to the "non scoobynet" servers.

This may change the layout of scoobynet.

To revert, simply remove the lines.

http://www.physicalcompany.co.uk/jason/scooby.txt

Full Hosts file with lots of blocks (inc scooby.txt)

http://www.physicalcompany.co.uk/jason/hosts.txt

Some people are having difficulties editing the file in vista. Have a read here:
http://www.windowsreference.com/wind...rror-in-vista/

EDIT: Just re-uploaded the hosts.txt due to a couple of small errors. (10:43 30/06/09)

Tis even quicker now

Tweaked the file a bit as one of the sites controlled a bit of the text formatting.

Just block all the adverts, avatars, sigs, and posts from PSL & some others and the site speeds up no end, it is amazing when you get rid of the drivel how quick things can get ;-)

Obviously the windows users have AD Plus blocker for firefox but us mac users seem a bit left out until I found this

GlimmerBlocker

Works in safari and firefox (though you need to manually tweak that) and it works a treat
No bollocksy ad.doubleclick stuff, google analytics etc.

Now working at a decent speed or how it should be

best way to speed the site up would be for IB to sell it on to a company who know how to run Internet Sites

OK, I've added the text to hosts.txt in the path in the OP, and rebooted. Is that it, because this sucker is flying now!

hanley pm sent

hosts.txt wont work ---- it has to be hosts (no extension)

you may need to goto folder options and make sure "hide extensions for known filte types" is unticked

the host file works at the network layer so all internet browsers use it, one by product is you can't click on the sponsored search result in google, because the link wants to take you to some bullsh1t analytics site first – no bad thing imo

I have ads still on and the site has always loaded fine for me be it at home or using 3g on my iphone.

How come it's only certain members get this trouble? (This is a genuine question not )trolling incase people read it wrong

you need to open the "hosts" file (double click) with notepad. Don't save as a text file, just save.

You need Admin rights

It sems to be a time based problem.

At some point someone in America does something to a server / router / hub that completely ***** ScoobyNet.

Trust me - when you catch it slow you'll know about it !

But making the change suggested in the OP does improve things DRAMATICALLY

I haven't a clue why a few users seem to consistantly have speed issues ( (as in since the server move last year) when for others the site responds and loads super quick (please bear in mind this is a seperate problem to the severe speed issues SN suffered over the weekened which affected everyone).

I fear maybe some ISPs throttle connections to US servers or to specific ad servers, which in turn has a knock-on effect for SN (especially if using Internet Explorer, due to the way it displays the page, it can cause delays in the page showing, thus the advice to use Firefox).

Blocking un-needed sites via the host file is a highly effective workaround. Especially if one "has" to use IE. As it will just instruct the broswer not to even bother trying to load data from the listed address(es).

Other things to look out for is IE's "Phishing filter" turn it completely off (not just disabled); it slows down general browsing no end. Ad servers can trip it off, which can cause a significant delay in a page loading. This does include SN as I've had it happen (which is why its turned off if I happen to use a PC without Firefox installed ).

Another thing to note: Bloaty firewalls and internet security programs, such as Norton Internet Security (or derviatives of, such as 360 ) and McAfee Internet security (and derivatives of such as Total and Family) where the firewall and active traffic monitoring can have a detriment to browsing performance and also affects certain sites more than others. Especially on computers which are short of memory and/or CPU power by the user having too many services running in the background and/or running too many programs all at once. My advice is use something else that is less instrusive and less resource hungry (such as Eset Smart Security).

Every little helps
