did anyone see the 2 page spread on 22 year old elliot short...?
apparently he made £20 million in a year with a particular system on betfair.com...
i was thinking surely it cant be this simple and surely he cant have been the first person to think of this...?
i was fascinated as i guy that used to work in the same place as me got into online spread betting and made a small fortune...!
anyone here into it or got any thoughts...???

Betfair Customer Services 29 Jun 13:13
We have been contacted by several customers in relation to an article in Sunday’s News of the World. We would like to make it clear that Betfair was not asked to comment on, or validate any aspect of, the article ahead of publication.
Although we cannot comment on the activities of any specific customer, some facts which may be relevant to some of the claims made in the article include:
the biggest winner in the relevant Britain’s Got Talent market (Susan Boyle winner - Yes/No) won less than £3,000.
No Betfair customer won £1.5 million or anything even vaguely approaching that amount betting on the Champion Hurdle.
No Betfair customer won £500,000 or anything even vaguely approaching that amount laying Monsieur Chevalier at Royal Ascot
The figures shown in the account statement screenshot in the News Of the World do not reconcile to any Betfair account.
The monies present in a Betfair account are obviously no indicator of the sums won or lost on the account.
We would encourage customers to be wary of the claims of anyone purporting to have a profitable system or strategy.
We would encourage customers to retain a healthy degree of scepticism toward any claims made in the press which are not validated by Betfair.

Chap who works here is a Gambler. Every night he's at either the Bookies, Casino, or betting online. Bets online at work all day too.
He goes to Las Vegas once a year for 2 weeks. The only sunshine he see's is walking between Casino's.
He's 45, single (No supprise there) and lives with his parents due to losing his flat due to Gambling debts. Has always drove a sh1tty car due to never having enough money to afford a decent one. Blows all his wage every month on betting.
He keeps getting "FREE" trips to here there and everywhere from the Bookies. Racing nights down in London etc. Brags that he gets all these freebies. Doesn't realise that he's payed for the trip many many times over. Plus they want him there as they'll be taking bets all night. It won't cost the Bookies a penny taking a coach full of Gamblers for a night out.
Apart from playing the lottery I never bet. Mugs game. Only winner is the Bookie/Casino.

I did read this story in the NOTW and yes it can happen if you are luckly. I have a Betfair account and as I work in IT and have access all day to a computer so I set myself up as a bookie. £5000 is my stake money to cover bets and I roughly do the same as this Elliott guy ( but of course no where near as successful ) Below is my profit ( after taking out my £5000 stake ) for the last 2 years. Its not easy and eats up a lot of my time ( at work...haha ) but its still more then I would earn in interest from a bank.

I'm sceptical about the authenticity of the article and the figures touted around in it. I can think of two players in the poker community (cts/aba20) who both rocketed from low stakes with just a few hundred dollars to both being millionaires in under a year. I'm pretty sure articles could have been written on their success and others encouraged that it's easy to replicate.
The truth of the matter is that Cole South (cts) and Brain Townsend (aba20) are two of the better poker players in the world. So not only were they miles more gifted than 99.999% of the poker playing gene pool (myself included and I play the game for a living and have done for 2 years!) but they also ran sick-hot during that first 12 months as well. Trust me, I'm a better poker player than probably anyone reading this thread and I know that the chances of me even turning $1000 into $500,000 (let along 20M) in the next year is way less than 0.0something percent.
My guess is that this is what we are seeing here from the racing world. If it's not lies or half-lies - which I suspect it is - then it's an incredibly gifted individual that has run sick hot and who's results would be almost impossible to replicate.
Pinch. of. salt.

Yeah, fine thanks I've hardly played in the last 3 months as I've picked up a short-term writing gig (poker related) for a poker production company but this year has certainly been far better than my first year went - which in itself wasn't a disaster but I didn't make as much as I did in my old job (but then I worked 20% of my old hours!).
My hourly rate since June 1st 2008 is around $48.27 at the tables and probably $14 in hourly rakeback/bonuses. That's about $60 per hour tax free, which is £36 in the current climate. Not quite ordering that Ferrari yet but the bills are paid each month

There is another guy who wins big on the horses. He is banned from every betting office, website and exchange in the UK. He has taken the bookies for Millions using intelligence, planning, research and tips, he has a large staff to place his bets now.
And i can't remember his damn name, he's in his late 20's and from a priviliged background and keeps a low profile. He did have a contract out on him but the guy who put it out is now locked up for life so he's a bit safer but still very secretive.
But he by far the most successful gambler in the UK for the last 100 years at least...
