Default Night of the long knives (and empty ballot slips)

James Purnell MP has just resigned as Work and Pensions Secretary with a letter that will be published in the press tomorrow stating that GB should stand down and calling for a leadership vote.

It is the dead moose on the table - now someone has mentioned it is there!

It's happened before (e.g. in Canada) that a political party has been vaped from history for ever. Similar circumstances if I remember. Lets hope!!

Gordon Brown = dead man walking

No need to watch Ashes to Ashes, go back to the 70's with this government and watch it implode just as the last LABOUR one did 30 years ago!

Majors Government was not 30 years ago!

Why should he go when all the signs are that he has, alone, steered the UK out of the economic wilderness .... and the world will follow.

Next spring you will all be singing his praises ...... just wait until the Tories have to attempt to put an actual Policy to the people!

A few more days Pete and it will be just you and him saving the world together. Everyone else is already jumping over board and there will - no doubt - be a few more in the morning

Shame the ballot papers were printed in advamce. Maybe they could have added "should Gordon quit" at the bottom of it lol
Maybe he would have got the message then lol.
Prob not though.

I think the OP might be slightly misunderstanding the meaning of the expression: "Night of Long Knives". Ever since the original one, it means a night when the leader disposes of his enemies, not the other way around. So yes, there probably will be one, with Brown culling anyone whose loyalty is even slightly questionable. Expect a lot of people in the cabinet that you've never heard of. Plus Ed *****.

Meridian,

First of all your post presupposes Brown is in charge

The night of the long knives as an expression predates Hitler's Putsch in 1934 and possibly dates back as far as times of the Arthurian legend simply meaning, vengence.
