Quite outstanding speech. Wonder why it has not been widely reported over here. I sometimes dream about being in a position to say something like that to him on TV. Doubt if I could carry it like Hannan did though.

Here's the transcript from there for those too lazy to click!
" ..
Prime Minister, I see you’ve already mastered the essential craft of the European politician, namely the ability to say one thing in this chamber and a very different thing to your home electorate. You’ve spoken here about free trade, and amen to that. Who would have guessed, listening to you just now, that you were the author of the phrase ‘British jobs for British workers’ and that you have subsidised, where you have not nationalised outright, swathes of our economy, including the car industry and many of the banks? Perhaps you would have more moral authority in this house if your actions matched your words? Perhaps you would have more legitimacy in the councils of the world if the United Kingdom were not going into this recession in the worst condition of any G20 country?
The truth, Prime Minister, is that you have run out of our money. The country as a whole is now in negative equity. Every British child is born owing around £20,000. Servicing the interest on that debt is going to cost more than educating the child. Now, once again today you try to spread the blame around; you spoke about an international recession, international crisis. Well, it is true that we are all sailing together into the squalls. But not every vessel in the convoy is in the same dilapidated condition. Other ships used the good years to caulk their hulls and clear their rigging; in other words – to pay off debt. But you used the good years to raise borrowing yet further. As a consequence, under your captaincy, our hull is pressed deep into the water line under the accumulated weight of your debt We are now running a deficit that touches 10% of GDP, an almost unbelievable figure. More than Pakistan, more than Hungary; countries where the IMF have already been called in. Now, it’s not that you’re not apologising; like everyone else I have long accepted that you’re pathologically incapable of accepting responsibility for these things. It’s that you’re carrying on, wilfully worsening our situation, wantonly spending what little we have left. Last year - in the last twelve months – a hundred thousand private sector jobs have been lost and yet you created thirty thousand public sector jobs.
Prime Minister, you cannot carry on for ever squeezing the productive bit of the economy in order to fund an unprecedented engorgement of the unproductive bit. You cannot spend your way out of recession or borrow your way out of debt. And when you repeat, in that wooden and perfunctory way, that our situation is better than others, that we’re ‘well-placed to weather the storm’, I have to tell you that you sound like a Brezhnev-era apparatchik giving the party line. You know, and we know, and you know that we know that it’s nonsense! Everyone knows that Britain is worse off than any other country as we go into these hard times. The IMF has said so; the European Commission has said so; the markets have said so – which is why our currency has devalued by thirty percent. And soon the voters too will get their chance to say so. They can see what the markets have already seen: that you are the devalued Prime Minister of a devalued government. .... "

What a load of Tory piffle, the reason Gordon brown is smiling is because hes confident in what he is doing, personally I like having a leader that's confident rather than the Tory dweeb that cant make up his mind on what to do.
At the end of the day its what America does that matters no country is going to come out of recession without America getting its act together and its America that's doing the same as brown.
People keep complaining about Brown spending his way out of recession, what would people rather do? see jobs lost? our industry is small as it is thanks to the last bunch of feckwits screwing it up, if we lost more skilled workers now it will be no existent.
Banks? well if you let the banks go down what happens to our accounts? our mortgages, savings, how do we and business work without banks? what happens when businesses cant get money? they go under, banks may not be lending as much as they need to and companies are going bust because of this, if the banks weren't supported do people really think it would be better? Most the money going into banks will be coming back in the future anyway just the scar mongering Tories would rather you think its all going to be doom and gloom for the future so that when they get in they'll have plenty of excuses for screwing things up like they did last time.
Its all very well and good to have a go at those trying to sort this mess out but it would be nice to know what alternatives actions could be taken.
Alternatives people, anyone?
Other European leaders are simply attacking the UKs polices to deflect their populations attention from their own failing economy, simple as that.

Mervyn King is not so confident about Gordon's abilities. His performance in front of the Treasury Select Committee was a bit reminiscent of Geoffrey Howe's attack on Margaret Thatcher that lead to her downfall.

Hannan Breaks the Million Views Barrier - Guy Fawkes' blog
".. In two days Hannan’s lashing of Gordon Brown has been watched a million times*. How popular is Gordon Brown’s speech on the same day to the EU parliament? Two thousand views. Daniel’s YouTube video has received over seven thousand comments in response. Gordon’s has the comments facility switched off, so not even a pretence of listening.
So much for Downing Street’s digital engagement.
*Dan’s viral video is now the most popular YouTube ever for a British politican. The next two most popular are Gordon picking his nose on the front bench, which had some 3/4 of a million views in various formats and Blair’s “Am I Bovvered” video for Red Nose Day with some 1/4 million views ... "

Brown has little or no presence or charisma at the best of times so he must keep looking confident.
The Tory guy speaks a lot of sense, you should perhaps listen clearly and take it all in because most of it is true.
Oh and please, no more it is the last lots' fault, after 11 years of NL in power, making the changes and decisions that excuse is wearing a little thin with everybody except the die hard NL lickspittles.
NL did not put money away for a rainy day.
NL put in place the FSA which in effect was not set up with the right staff and calibre of people to do the job properly and effectivly and which has let this situation happen.
FSA should stand for Fecking Sod All
Brown is supposed to be from a financial background, it does not really show at the moment and his past performance is somewhat suspect.
As for Tory 'dweeb', do not know him but i think he is a good and powerful speaker who made some good points and put Brown in an uncomfortable place.
'Dweeb' - how old are you? its a primary school kids speak!

Having seen the youtube clip of Daniel Hannan giving it to Grumpy Chops McGoon I couldn't help thinking he is wasted at the EU. What made this speech so good was that he spoke for (almost) all of us. It was made all the more powerful because you knew Daniel spoke from the heart.
Over 1 million people have seen it - Hannan's speech alone is the most successful Tory political broadcast since the last election. He spoke for all of us. Someone has to hold the Government to account - no-one listens to the taxpayer who is, of course, paying the bills and the salary and pensions of the people who got us into this mess.
So, come on Tories - get on with it and call these villains to account. NOW!!

Brown really thinks he can lie through his teeth and people won't notice. He really is living in cloud-cuckoo land .... He's on his South American jaunt at the moment (I hope he turns out the lights in his hotel room at 8-30 tonight ...) and as reported here Gordon Brown Suffers More Embaraassment On His World Tour - This Time In Chile | Politics | Sky News says " ... Mr Brown responded by pointing out the International Monetary Fund believed Britain was better prepared than most countries for the downturn .... ". Strange but I thought they'd said not ... and lo and behold we have here BBC NEWS | Business | UK recession 'will last longest'
" ... The recession will last longer in the UK than in any of the world's other major economies, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has predicted ... ".
Geez the guy is a liability. Can't wait for him to try fawning over Obama and co this week and get rebuffed at every step as they don't want to be associated with a loser.
Though on the other hand it's sad that this country's leadership has sunk so low in international standing that that will be the case.

Wonder how you will think when you eventually see the real results both of the overborrowing and artificial boosting of the economy to make it look good, the gross waste of taxpayer's money and the borrowing to finance the rest of their profligate overspending, thus leaving us in a hole when it comes to the recession? What a good idea it was to flog off over half of our gold reserves at the lowest possible price!
You and your children will be paying for all this in your taxes for years to come!
