Hi Ian,

I manage an EPOS system for one of customers. Multiple EPOS terminals, Credit Card processing, barcode scanning etc etc.

What's the question(s)?

Hiya Chris,
I basically have no clue about the systems. At the moment we have a regular till, credit card processing and do regular stock check.

We want to convert all the products in the store into a computerised system and give each a barcode. Thats our main objective. What i want to ask is , what would i need really? is it possible to make up your own bar-codes? and print them off? Some products have bar codes and some don't. If a new product comes available is it possible to add it into the system?

The next objective. We want to have a stock control system, where we have all the products in a database and the quantity. We then want to tie this in with the above, so when a product gets sold the database gets updated and we can tell when some products are getting low and need to be re-ordered. This is really so we can just keep an eye of what goes on. Is this possible? or do you know of any websites which could help? I've been looking on the web but can't find anything except things like Http://www.eposwarehouse.com which aren't helping that much.

Thankyou for any help given. really appreciate it.

HOS, i work for the market leading company in Europe for this type of system. Customers of ours include JJB Sports, Matalan, Poundstrecher, Blacks Leisure, Sport Soccer, All:sports, Clinton Cards etc. etc. I could go on for ages. Dont worry, we cater for the smaller sized businesses also. Everything you want to do is easily achievable. You need a systems integrator and software supplier, the EPOS warehouse type businesses are just good at supplying parts really.

We also supply the bar and betting industries and do the microwave TV links for the betting shops etc.

I run the team that manages the large customer head office systems that control the warehouses and ship to store based on overnight EPOS polling etc. etc.

Check out my companies web site. http://www.alphameric.com/
The retail division is what you need to look into http://www.alphameric.com/retail/index.shtml

If you get no joy send me a mail.

Hos,
Depends a lot on your allocated budget for this....
there's a lot of EPOS systems which are highly efficient and highly expensive..and if you are only running a small enterprise...do you want this sort of capital outlay?
There are a number of packages available which have the capability of linking barcodes using scanners into databases.
Have you tried investigating companies like Sage who do Financial Accounting,Stock Control etc as these may provide you with all the ingredients that you require at a reasonable cost

good call Hos.using epos will enable you to work out your actual stock loss figure. At the moment you are working very much on gross margin, but with Epos............prepare to be shocked!

The maths are simple, each barcode has a cost price attached to it and the tills can then total the exact cost of all goods sold.If you track your stock manually and thus calculate an actual cost of sales, the comparison with the theoretical cos from the Epos system will give you a loss figure.Or "shrink" as its quaintly named!

The capital outlay could well be offset against increased controls, both in terms of better stock mgt (less capital tied up with slow sellers on the shelf and of course fast selling lines staying in stock!) and of course visibility of loss.

Good luck!
