Thumbs down Duplicate Key Prices

Fitted a new Yale Lock barrel recently on the front door ..... old one was sticking.

Got 4 keys with the new barrel ..... need 3 more.

Went into the key cutter today and ......... he said £5 for a duplicate key

£5!!!!!! I was expecting them to cost about £1:50 each or
something????

After some gentle bartering I got 3 for £9 ..... but still feel shafted ...... why so expensive?

You don't get rich by paying what is asked .......

Sounds like you get rich from being in the key business.

It's only about 2 euros to get a key cut in Spain, but here in ripoff Britain it's at least a fiver a key, although 3 for £9 isn't bad going but you still got ripped off!

If you look about you can still get Yale keys cut for around £1:50. Also : you are not rich.

We had to get our locks changed recently and the Yale type ones could only be cut by the supplier (something to do with special numbers.........whatever.......) and they were £5-6 each IIRC. On the up side.......we could still get the Chubb ones done at the local hardware store for a couple of quid.

Bartering, wtf is this, 1942?

Jeez, you got a discount and still feel shafted?

This is what happens when you have too much time on your hands, the little things, that you wouldnt have given a second thought to if you were busy working, suddenly demand your full attention, then require an internet post afterwards

To be honest i don't see the problem with asking if the price is their best, especially in the current climate. Ok it might be terribly British what what to just pay up, but if you ask respectfully, the worst that can happen is to be declined.

Timpsons in London charge £6 for a key, i also think that's bloody ridiculous. Worse, you can spend £44 having shoes re-soled, and that isn't even their best option.
