Default Fiat gains huge stake in Chrysler

Who'd have thought it a few years ago.

BBC NEWS | Business | Fiat and Chrysler create alliance

Shame they have nothing decent to bring to Europe like the Charger, Challenger or Mustang.

Not any more and they got 35% of Chrysler with NO cash, only technology and management expertise.

Well, AFAIK Iveco are still in dodgy waters, yet are part of Fiat.

I see Merc (Daimler) want rid of their share in Chrysler - dipped its toes and got burnt...badly!

Interesting; Can't see what Fiat thinks it can do better than Merc did. They both have high-end diesel and gearbox technology as well as commercials, yet barring platform sharing of old models and rebadging Merc sprinters, it seems Merc has run out of steam, or maybe they are scared to commit fully in fear it will drag them down with it?

Ironic that a few years ago, GM paid big money ($2 billion ish IIRC) to avoid having to buy Fiat and get out of their tie-up.

Apparently Merc were well on the way down the electric car route when they merged with Chrysler. MB pretty much had a production-ready electric original A-Class ready to put on public sale using newly developed battery technology. Quite a few cars were on test around the world.

Chrysler made them drop the project, because they thought the world wanted the pick-up truck that they were developing, which was powered by stupidly heavy old-fashioned lead-acid batteries like a milk float.

Surprisingly Chrysler was proven wrong on that one and the whole thing was canned.

Good luck FIAT.

The Fiat 500 is also the new KA. The Suzuki SX is also part Fiat.

I can just see a hybrid Fiat/Chrysler, crap build quality, terrible customer care and they break down a lot.

Hang on thats what happens now!

Not great I would agree but on the other hand they have a better recent history of successful RHD sales of American cars than most of the US manufacturers if you think of the 300CC and the Jeep range for example.

Legend has it that it was the long defunct AMC (American motor corp) was the savior of Chrysler/Dodge - As their take-over of the then failing AMC allowed Chrysler to use the Jeep brand; In effect it was AMC that invented the SUV, of which is Chrysler's bread and butter car.
