Round one of many to come, according to my bro in law.
M&S' wages bill must be astronomic. My sis in law is on 40k for a 3 day week, + £500 per month car allowance! She's a merchandiser.

1000 jobs from an approximate of 70,000
About ten million miles away administration then
1000 job losses was inevitable with the current credit crunch, no real news here, markies haven't gone bust, just a few are going to lose their jobs.
Next headline please

Always amazes me that they can find a round number to fire. Looks like they have not put much thought into it. It also makes firms look like they had too many staff in the first place.

Does this include the extra casual staff they probably took on over the Christmas period as it's 'normally' busy?
End of the day, most of these shops have too many staff standing around doing f**k all all day!

Me too.
Mind you, media are loving it as with all the housing market, stock market, bank problems.
It would however be nice to hear a '2500 jobs being created' story though as there is a lot of contracting rather than expanding.
Heard a bit on the radio about the worry of companies making unnecessary 'panic' redundancies, following everyone else in thinking they need to lay people off
