Marks and Spencers Lose 1,000 Jobs

Just been confirmed.

Will be announced tomorrow, officially.

Matteeboy 06 January 2009 12:52 PM

Ouch!
Did Phillip Green buy it in the end or not?

TelBoy 06 January 2009 12:56 PM

Nope, failed three times.

You just know that they will be using those adverts ('This is not just food etc') to take the mick.

Round one of many to come, according to my bro in law.

M&S' wages bill must be astronomic. My sis in law is on 40k for a 3 day week, + £500 per month car allowance! She's a merchandiser.

Billgtt 06 January 2009 02:47 PM

Bloody supermarket syndrome! There's no S on the end :nono:

Yes, but there will be many on the minimum wage to offset her salary.

TelBoy 06 January 2009 02:51 PM

Exactly. Let's hope Sainsbury don't also follow suit. :Suspiciou

1000 jobs from an approximate of 70,000

About ten million miles away administration then

1000 job losses was inevitable with the current credit crunch, no real news here, markies haven't gone bust, just a few are going to lose their jobs.

Next headline please ;)

Matteeboy 06 January 2009 02:58 PM

72,000 to be more precise.

Even on total minimum wage that's a £720 million salary bill!!!

richardg 06 January 2009 03:13 PM

my sister is a menswear designer for m&s. will have to speak to her tomorrow

(no relation to PG btw, although i would of course like to be!)

dpb 06 January 2009 03:13 PM

where'd they lose um :Suspiciou

When I saw the thread title, I knew it was posted by Pete.

He loves a bit of misery!

Morrisons: amd they dont even use an apostrophe...

Matteeboy 06 January 2009 05:05 PM

I guess "M&S to shed 13.8% of their workforce" doesn't quite have the same media friendly "shock" factor does it?!

dpb 06 January 2009 05:08 PM

Ummm , i looked at the figure and thought - well if thats all .....!!

- they exist everywhere afterall

jacrobat 06 January 2009 05:17 PM

Always amazes me that they can find a round number to fire. Looks like they have not put much thought into it. It also makes firms look like they had too many staff in the first place.

Probably just stop recruiting for 6-12 months they would lose 1000 staff by "natural wastage" retirements etc.

72000 jobs with 1000 to go, I make it 1.38%

Which is 1.5 people per shop I think?

Steve

SlimJ_2005 06 January 2009 08:12 PM

Does this include the extra casual staff they probably took on over the Christmas period as it's 'normally' busy?

End of the day, most of these shops have too many staff standing around doing f**k all all day!

What a surprise!

Leslie 07 January 2009 11:51 AM

M&S is a good store I reckon and I hope they dont go to the wall.

Les

lozgti 07 January 2009 12:14 PM

Me too.

Mind you, media are loving it as with all the housing market, stock market, bank problems.

It would however be nice to hear a '2500 jobs being created' story though as there is a lot of contracting rather than expanding.

Heard a bit on the radio about the worry of companies making unnecessary 'panic' redundancies, following everyone else in thinking they need to lay people off

dpb 07 January 2009 12:17 PM

Hey ,Gordans 'creating' a hundred thousand new jobs in the next few years ill have you know .!

lol

They are not going to the wall, just trimming some fat as has been said here and elsewhere. It's just a nasty rumour that certain types of people love to put about, like 'no more cheap petrol' etc.
