Default Are the proposed car tax bands deffinatly changing?

I'm shopping for a new car and I don't fancy being landed with a £300+ tax bill.

Are they deffinatly going to change? Been looking at Foresters and they are F and G bands which means £300 - £400 tax.

Could mean the end of my Subaru ownership.

I'm not sure I understand? I thought those sorts of prices applied to cars registered after March 1st 2001? I assume you car was imported into the country after that date and thats why the high cost?

I think is disgraceful! No wonder used values are plummeting!

I argued my case till I was blue in the face but to no joy.

The car was imported into the country in August 2007 and initially my tax was quite low but then I got stung in 2008 when I renewed earlier in the year.

I was told by the chap at DVLA that my car (along with other older vehicles) has been recorded as an 2006 STi model regardless of the fact that it's an import.

So basically they use the 2006 model as a reference and measured my car against that - stealth tax at it's finest.

What is the Tax class on your v5? and what are the co/2 on the v5? i would of thought that an import it wouldn't have the emissions on it?

That's only in the FIRST year of ownership.
it includes a new 'showroom' tax and the usual road tax.
Subsequent years will be £425 (or whatever they increase it by).

With all the imports that Ive taxed they have been classed as PLG(private light goods) which are pre 2001/y reg, seems like you've been pretty unlucky. If your car is made before 27th March 2006 its in a lower tax class, if you could prove that it was manufactured before that, it might get it changed at the DVLA.

I think its quite funny.

Roger the car Industry whilst its on its knees and screw the population when its really struggling so as to save the squirrel I leave a few nuts out for every day.

I think they thought up the original changes when we were all 'rich' and its gone a bit wrong since hence the back track

(love that about insisting the 2000 car will go down as a 2006 car barstewards )

Well thats about right - another well thought out and ill researched way to hit the motorist more. Originally done to try and persuade people to buy newer green car - shame the amount of pollution all the UK cars gives out is such an insignificant amount it not really worth doing - apart from giving the government more cash to waste !

Just a way of screwing the easy targets.

Having put all the figures together last night looks like I could be heading for my first choice, an A3 TDi quattro.

If I can find 1 that is at what I term a reasonable price.

What annoys me is, that private hire taxi's. Some of which are on the road 24/7 pay the same tax as someone who just drives to work and back and some on the weekend. How is that fair.

aye, I am gonna dispute it, I need to write to DVLA and provide information on the car and when it was manufactured to get the details changed.

If anyone has a 2000 year STi/Type RA then let me know what the Taxation Class and CO2 figures are so I can use the info when arguing my case.

If they don't budge then I may have to get the car through another SVA test which is going to be costly :s

Agree with the above posters, you would think, in light of our current economic climate Mr Brown would lighten the load for people like cutting vehicle tax in half, council tax in half etc but no - to ensure he keeps his masters happy (the financiers/bankers) we all get screwed.

I wasn't worried before but been thinking about it today, the stark reality is frightening when you start to wonder what will happen when things get worse than this.

Or like me, who has done less than a thousand mile in the last six months because I use my push bike, the green argument doesnt really add up, what emits more a Saab that does 2k a year paying £300 or a BMW 118D on £35 doing 30k a year ?

J4CKO your spot on I font mind paying a road tax to have vehicle on the road as a flat rate, surely the tax from fuel is the "green" way of taxing?

They should just bung the road tax on fuel then we'd only be paying when we're driving.
