IT Contract Market - Awful
Hi all,
Im a solaris / unix contractor and am currently looking for contracts in the south east, i.e. surrey / hampshire / sussex. Anyone else noticed how pi55 poor the contract market is ?
A few jobs up in the city, but been there, done it for 7 years, so am trying to stay out of that area.
Ive been contracting over 12 years now, and its the worst Ive ever seen it.
How you lot finding it ?
Cheers

Quite frankly quite a lot of mediocre people in the IT contracting market have been earning more than good money in the City, whilst delivering pretty poor results. I hope they squirrelled their ill-gotten gains away, as they'll be needing something to fall back on right now.

I agree about the comment regarding mediocre people, but thats life. Lost count of the number of contracts Ive been on where the resident permies complain about contractors, about how we are money robbing gits, w4nkers, useless, whilst they sit back and do nothing, as we fix the systems.

Yeah i work for a big accountants doing IT and the market is terrible.
The days of good money doing long term contract work are over..for the moment.
Best trying to get a lower paid perm position for a while and ride out the wave mate

yep - why I left the contract market this year, after being in it for over 8 years.
We had a big demand for .NET developers in Buckinghamshire but it's gone all dead round here now.

We are struggling to get staff over here in Australia, on what is/will be one of the biggest IT projects in the world.
But I have had 4 of my old colleagues in the last month contact me asking if I know anything going. There are an awful lot of IT contractors out of work.

I am an Oracle and SQL Server DBA, did one contract and went perm with them cos I am so great
Glad I am not contracting at the moment, or rather, glad I am not looking for a contract.
I like being near home, cant be arsed with living away, in London this week and it would drive me mad doing it all the time, dont mind a bit of time away but not that bothered about money, do alright anyway.

There's seems to be a hell of a lot of out-of-work IT bods out there! We've had to hire some network engineers recently (Cisco, Extreme, 3com skills), and the amount of CV's we've got has been amazing - and some people with excellent skill sets and experience are scrambling over low-end positions!
