I'm a non-believer and don't link mediums with religion.

Not really appropriate as the fraudster could spook the kids.

Cool

Well, I don't believe mediums can do what they say either, so from my point of view, it's just a bit of fun.

I think you have to try and take a balanced point of view on this though, you say it is against your religion, but I'm sure plenty of people would fine the teachings of your religion offensive. It's a tolerance thing.

At the end of the day, they're your kids, and unless it's compulsory for them to attend, don't send them, but don't try to censure other people.

This isn't a religious issue.

Confidence tricksters prey on the minds of the weak, children aren't fair game

The kids don't have to go. But the problem I have is what they are doing in the school is very dangerous. Before i became a christian, my mum would go to these and they would be able to tell us things about my Nan, no one could know. Some of the Mediums are very real, but some are also very fake.

No I know but if I go into the school saying it shouldn't be held, all I will get back from people is "just because your a christian" type of response

Oh I see, parents only.

Well in that case whats the problem?

I am not a religous person, reading previous threads on the subject I think you can band me in with those you've mentioned in the thread title.

Some people, bizarrely enough believe in this medium type of thing, up to them, let them get on with it.

1. Some mediums are associated with spiritualist churches, some even have their own - Spiritus Novae (sp.) run by the US medium Sylvia Browne is a case in point.

2. Schools are supposed to be a place of education and learning. If they are also going to present a sceptic at the same session to explain how cold reading works then fair play. If not then I guess I'd ask what the motive is.

Show me a medium who has won the lottery and I will treat them with new found respect .

Mediums I would have said is just harmles crystal ball fun,

Ouija board sessions at the school I think would be a bit iffy.I don't like that kind of stuff myself and I've never even tried it

Do a You Tube search for Sylvia Browne or Jonathan Edwards and see if you still think it's harmless fun what they do. You may also be interested in - Stop Sylvia Browne

Personally I am of the opinion that mediums are a bunch of con artists, preying on peoples losses, insecurities, fears and hopes in a way that is pretty damned reprehensible.

I think that them having anything to do with a school is a bit and the idea mentioned about having a sceptic there would be a good idea, as said, to explain how these mediums are coming up with their 'readings'.

As Olly mentioned, plenty of people are fleeced out of lots of money by these so called mediums.

Ouija boards are a complete nonsense as well, that's just a bit of psychology etc. I'd quite happily have a go on one just to prove what a load of cack it all was.

Anyone who believes in mediums abilities is either at a junction of their life where emotion has over-taken reason (deaths in family etc.) or they are easily led, weak minded types who will believe in anything if it makes them feel better about themselves.

Let us know how it goes, MOK

Derren Brown has done one of the best cold readings I have ever seen. Knocks all the "professional" mediums in to a cocked hat.

Mediums

Most Haunted

Fortune Tellers

etc,etc all make my smirk and so on.But I still believe there are an awful lot of things that go on that we can't/will never be able to explain.

Shirly Ghostman or whatever and the spirit dog made me larf out loud though.Especially the people who didn't realise it was a spoof

There may be a lot you and I can't explain, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been or can't be.

Not sure where i said i was a complete non believer. I for one am prepared to accept that the answer is not known but i don't see the point in blindly agreeing with everything in a book that appears to be a blend of fact and fiction.

On this matter though i agree with the others, it isn't a matter religious matter although personally i do think spooks are possible as i've had a number of funny experiences. Probably not one for the kids but nothing to do with it being against any god or gods.

This sounds like an excellent opportunity for you to demonstrate your tolerance and understanding of people whose beliefs differ from your own. I'm sure that, especially as a religious person, you would expect nothing less of anyone else.

Isn't this exactly the sort of thing that being a multi-cultural society is all about?

I haven't necessarily got a problem with people having a belief in this, But my argument is that to hold it in a school is completely inappropriate.

Sorry mate, but I think you're embarrassing yourself here.

You're offended by the idea of people being exposed to something controversial and with which you don't agree - yet you have a religious belief yourself.

Presumably you're not offended by a school having a Chaplain? Why not?

Is a religious assembly in a school inappropriate in your eyes?

Oh, and by the way - NO mediums are real, they are ALL FAKE.

Hope this Helps.

It's as appropriate as having any other spiritual/religious/paranomal activity in the school then.

So yes, or no, depending on how tolerant you are of other people's beliefs.

I suspect you have answered that question with your original post though.

The difference being, Mediums call on any spirit, as apposed to a good spirit or a particular spirit that they know is good..
I would expect people to say to me not to have a (for example) prayer meeting in the school. But as it goes they don't. And if they did then I would fully understand.

In my eyes no its not. As I know the spirit is the Holy spirit and that is all that is called upon.

I beg to differ. Mediums can be very real.......

You're still missing the irony here.

Mediums are controversial. Some people firmly believe in them, some are unsure, and some find them disturbing or offensive.

Surely you must see the similarity with how other people feel about your religious beliefs?

To answer your original question: I think it's appropriate to exactly the same degree as a school having religious assemblies or services. In other words, not at all appropriate - unless all common views are presented equally, so that the kids can make their own minds up regardless of what their peers or families may choose to believe.
