Default Improving Garage Security

Two mates of mine have recently had bikes nicked out of their sheds and garages, £7k in goods gone.

So I'm looking to improve my own garage securtiy. Its already tied into the house alarm but I would like to add some more security to the door itself. The garage door is an up and over job. Currently just has the normal lock on it.

So short of buying a Dobberman and keeping him in the garage what other options are open to me.
Cheers

2 Dobermans (Dobermen?)

How about one of those locking posts that are concreted in to the ground in front of the door?

One consideration is: do you have a family?

The reason being. If you make it impossible for thieves to pinch what you've got without coming into your property to get the keys etc.. then some, not all, might! So, you need to make preparations for this!

When families are involved, most would -quite understandably- rather not give the thieves reason to get into the house in the first instance.

Something like this?

garage security, garage door security, garage door security bolts, diy garage security, elitesecuritysupplies.com

But it might make people think you've got something worth stealing.

The garage defenders are good if have a good concreate base to put it and if painted the same colour as the garage door - so blends in better. But they are a pain when its riaining or snowing !
I have a set of these on my door more discrete and a bit quicker to use Asec Garage Door Lock
Can get them on ebay a fair bit cheaper !

I've a seperate garage alarm inatalled with a vibration switch on the garage door so if try the handle the alarm goes off !

I would like the garage door to look as normal as possible from the outside. I'd rather not have those external locking post things which to me says "hey, I've got something shinny in my garage!"

Here what you are saying Ns04. The keys to cars and that live downstairs where they can't be fished out. But if someone did come into the house to steal the cars using the keys they would be able to get at them without putting the family in danger.

I'm thinking a couple deadbolts and I see you get internal locking posts so its not obvious. What's a reputable make for this?

I had a padlock and a hasp and eye, bolted to the middle of the door, and the floor on the inside, but you need another door to go out of.

Leave a huge St Steel dog bowl (with Tyson written in it) in front of the garage door, with a length of heavy gauge chain and a large studded collar on the floor.

Then get a small sign made up........"Tyson's House" place this on the garage door, and maybe a sign on a gate "WARNING MY DOG ROAMS FREE AT MY PROPERTY"

Thieves hate BIG dogs.

I've just got this vision of jumping out of bed every time the wind moved the garage door!

Security post just inside the garage would be good. Nothing visible outside, then a lengthy problem to solve for someone if they break in.

At the end of the day what ever you fit needs to be usable on a daily basis, come heavy downpour or blizzard. I rely on the house alarm which works for the garage, which we set even when we are in the house (my garage is at the bottom of the garden, we live on a corner so its some distance from the hosue). I have an alarm box prominantly on display on the front of the garage. My bikes and motorbikes are all fastened to ground anchors using sold secure chains and locks. I have wrought iron grills at the window. You can only do so much. Its all insured.

Move your bed down to the garage and sleep in there. Keep a large stick with nails in it under your pillow.

Sorted
