Sparrowhawk!
Saw one catch and kill a collared dove in our back garden this morning. It then stood on the dove, plucked it and ate it.
I've been out to clear away any mess, to find that there are ONLY FEATHERS left. It's eaten the whole dove: beak, legs, feet, bones....the lot

My thread a while back turned out to be a Sparrowhawk. One that has decided its easy pickings in our garden and is now helping itself to the local bird population. In the last 2 weeks from the garden its had one of my collared doves and a black bird. And what a bloody messy eater it is too, feathers everywhere. And since doing this the birds are now staying away from the garden, the bird table would be emptied in 2 hours with the food I put out there, now its there for 3 days. I like birds of prey but I don't like them using my back garden as a drop in buffet.

Can you send the Sparrowhawk round here please? Every day I put food out for the birds and the blooming collared doves come and nick it all. It's not so bad when my dog is here as she thinks they're pigeons so chases them away (pigeon chasing is her favourite game ) but she's on her holidays with my folks at the moment.
As long as it goes away when the ducklings hatch I'll be happy, it breaks my heart to see how many get eaten each spring. The little yellow ones seem to be the favourites

Derby has a Peregrine nest on top of the Cathedral Derby Peregrine Webcam (video supported by yours truly... ish ) and one time we were checking the feed and we managed to watch a vole being eaten live on TV. (we get to see the full streaming footage as we were watching it via the LAN connection, not the 'net one)

Got to the top of my road this morning, thought there was something out the corner of my eye, looked and saw the sparrowhawk flying parallel with the car about 5m away - awesome
It was swooping over the recently cut wheat field looking for mices or pigeons...
Just hoping it doesn't get too big for its boots and decide that Border Terrier puppy might make a good meal
