Question Dolphin/Whale watching in UK

Anyone done this and can give me the lowdown. e.g. where to go for 2 or 3 days and hopefully spot any dolphins and maybe even a whale?

Something mixed in with other seabirds would be ideal.

Too old to go tramping over some remote scottish island in the outer isles

Cheers, david

Thirded, although I've never been on a cruise. A local pointed us in the direction of Chanonry Point Chanonry Point Feature Page on Undiscovered Scotland although when we went it was chucking it down and blowing a gale so we stayed in the car It's one of the best places to see the dolphins (other than from a boat).

The Falkland Islands is fantastic for Whales and Dolphin watching we used to have the Dolphins or Porpoises racing our patrol boats. Those things can seriously shift as our patrol boats were no slouch. There are also a shed loads of Seals and Sea Lions etc.

However it may be a tad far to go for a long weekend trip

Here's a whale related story.

Where I work, there is a shop floor, a Product Engineering dept and an upstairs R&D department. I work in R&D.

One day, when I smoked, I was sitting the the smoking room we used to have (It's gone now, obviously, it was disgusting, even the windows were yellow, but I digress).
A woman from the shop floor, having a conversation with her friend about a recent trip to Iceland she went on.

"Oh it was fackin fantastic" She enthused.

"We were on this boat, right, and view was well good, what with scenery and that, and then we all saw it, and it went dead quiet, but Dave was on the other side of the boat, so I shouted....."

I'll finish the sentence in a second, but first, picture the scene. You are on a trip, in Iceland. You are presented with a breathtaking vista, a revered hush falls over the boat as one of the most awesome sights in nature reveals itself in all its majesty before your eyes. This is what you came for, this is money well spent, this is a moment that will live with you forever.

The sentence finished like this:

"HERE.... DAVE... IT'S A FACKIN WHALE"

Man, I think I would have killed her.

I started writing a book when I lived in Tenerife. It was provisionally entitled Whale Watching but funnily enough it wasn't about any aquatic form of life.... I must finish it one day.

We get quite a few basking sharks cruising around down here. Gives you a bit of a turn when you first see one. Anything up to 30 feet long just on the surface and they are usually a good bit bigger than my motor boat.

Your never 'too old' to come to a scottish island! And there's nowhere better for seabirds and sea mammals. Take your car, that way there is no 'tramping' required!!!!
