If you use www.mamma.com and then try the following query

backpacking +australia

You'll get lots of useful links for accomodation etc in Aussie

Look for youth hostels (YHA). We stayed in one on Sydney and for 30 quid a night got a double room with bathroom in Sydney Central YHA which was lovely !!

THORPEM,

Check out Noosa Keys just outside Brisbane !! Great place !!

I was there for new years' 1999/2000 and had a blast !! You have to jump off the bridge over the river at night !! 25 foot drop into pitch black - really funny !!

Try and get yourself up further north too - do the boat trips with the crocodiles - awesome !!

Great place - if you like cricket check out the Gabba too !!

Lucky so and so !!

John

Question

My and a friend are flying out to Brisbane Australia at the end of March. Arranging accomodation when we get there. Has anyone been and can recommend good "cheap" places to stay, and things not to miss when we get there ?

Regards
Mark

Hi

Went to Australia for a year before uni and to be honest, if you want 'proper' cheap (ie the 'youth' hostels) there are so many to choose from you can do it when you arrive and dont really need to worry about it before hand. The only instance really is when you first arrive (especially if in the dead of night), purely for peace of mind. Also, similarly, if you plan to move around (and are going somewhere obscure perhaps) and arrive somewhere at a weird time it may be best to plan ahead a little. We did this for the first couple of places we went to but soon gave it up and just waited till be arrived at our destination.

Its so geared up for backpackers and the like that theres so many to choose from. When you get off a coach/plane etc.. there are usually many people from the hostels to meet you (ie touts ), most of whom are European.

In Brisbane I think I stayed at a place called 'The Brisbane Palace'. Probably not the very cheapest place but pretty decent, comparatively speaking!

If you wanted to move up a notch (ie to hotels) you would be safer to select one before and book. But even so, Im pretty sure there would be a wide choice.

What not to miss? Well, if you are travelling around Australia and not just staying in Brisbane, the first thing you have to resign yourself to is that there is no way (adequately) that you will do everything you want to in one trip! And if you are planning to move around by Greyhound/McCafferty's coaches, be prepared for some long hauls - 12,13 + hours sometimes! And watch out for dodgy pies at the Roadhouses in the middle of no-where...

You'll have a great time!
