Space Invaders is 30!
My God, that makes me feel old! I remember when Space Invaders was launched and just how revolutionary it was compared to other games at the time. Happy memories spent down my local arcade.

It's not just you Warren
I can remember being taken to swimming lessons when I was about 8 or 9, and my always Mum having to drag me off the newly arrived space invaders machine in the reception area at the baths

Do you remember the 'colour' version that had a series of plastic coloured films for each level the Space Invaders dropped?
What really makes me feel old is that I remember playing it at the old Burton bus station cafe. All that's gone now under a housing development.... gawd I need to lie down

mmm, nostalgia. I've only recently got MAME running on the xbox and have been quite happily whiling away the hours playing Space Invaders, Asteroids and Frogger, along with many other great games. Talk about simple pleasures!
One of my faves is Tempest, as that's one of the first arcade games I recall playing, funnily enough, it too was at the local pool.

My life changed!! I was about 8 or 9 on holiday at Pontins with my parents and I discovered video games. I then spent inordinate amounts of time playing Space Invaders, Asteroids, Missile Command and Boothill (if anyone remembers that):

I got space invaders on an Atari when I was very small. Local shopping center set it up on a projector giving a 16 ft screen, with a freeeeeeeee Atari game for whoever got the highest score over a week. I managed to play one game for eight hours, and won the free game. I picked Asteroids. About a month later they had an Asteroids competition. You had to take a picture of your score on the screen and send it in. I had played one game for a day and a half (no pause) and had racked up 16 million points. I hadn't taken a picture since 10 million (cost a fortune to get pictures developed) when my Ma came in, said, "dinners ready" and unplugged the Atari. 10 million was enough to get me in the shopping center showdown, which i won. The prize was a remote control VCR. (The remote control was a box with about 6 huge buttons on it and a rubber tube hooked to the VCR. It used air pressure to control the VCR.... IIRC we got a free copy of Blazing Saddles 'thrown in' )

I used to love playing Defender in the basement of Oasis in Birmingham. All those buttons to press like Smartbomb and Hyperspace. The noises use to make my hair stand on end
Other games such as Pac Man, Galaxian (I can still remember those sounds). Pole Postition was my favourite. The amount of 10Ps I spent on that thing

Anyone remember Dragon's Lair? It was really a cartoon on screen and to this day I don't think the user could do much to control the game play

Yeah there was a scene in that when you are going down a river and could go left or right. I knew the correct way to go, but did it ever go where I wanted? PAH! (think it was the first DVD based game)
