Question iPod Syncing

Hi Snetters... Laptop was stolen, I now have a new laptop

iPod has 5,000 tunes on it, about 4,500 ripped from CD, 500 from the iTunes store.

New laptop authorised, but it is only syncing (copying) the iTunes music, it's not bothering with the 4,500 tunes ripped from CD??

I have the CD's in the loft, but really don't want to be faffed to rip them all again, I really do need them on the laptop though.

Am I doing something wrong?

I don't think so. I had a similar experience when attempting to plug my iPod into a new laptop. In the end I just resorted to the long and tedious route of ripping from CD.

You need a program to take the tunes off of your iPod and transfer them to your Laptop. Plenty available, I've used anapod before but that's no longer free.

I built a new desktop recently and had this issue, no amount of "authorising pc" worked.
It was a setting somewhere in the end..
Something to do with the ipod being only able to be linked with one music store at a time, once I'd found my way round that it syc'd everything fine.

If the music only exists on the iPod then, as Jack says, you'll need an application to copy the music from the iPod to the computer, as iTunes does not allow this, it's Apple's way of copy protecting music. I think the purchased music syncs because there is a command in iTunes to specifically allow you to recover purchased music from the iPod to the computer.

So... basically, I have to rip all the CD's again?

Well that's just great. I fvcking hate this thieving scum world of ours, we seriously need to change the rules back into the good man's favour.

The theory is, all your music is on the iPod as pre theft, you synced it from the computer, where the music was originally stored, to the iPod, so it was in both places. Now you have a new machine, the music is just on the iPod. Apple prevents you from copying music from the iPod to your new computer. The reason for this is otherwise you could plug in your friends iPod and then copy all their music to your machine, and thus this could be seen as copyright theft.

What you need is an application, and there are a few, anapod and copypod being two of them, that allow you to copy the music from the iPod back onto your computer. Thus you won't need to re-rip anything.

The reason the music you purchased from the iTunes Music Store is copied back is because Apple does allow you to copy purchased music back to iTunes. There is an "Transfer Purchases from iPod" command under the file menu in iTunes that allows this.

Have a read of this article which explains things and also offers suggestions of applications to use to get the music copied from your iPod to your computer.
