Want To Save On Fuel - Course You Do ...
"Record prices at the pumps could succeed where 6,000 cameras and millions of pounds in road-saftey advertising have failed for decades – by securing compliance with the speed limit.
Driving more slowly will save drivers up to £500 a year in fuel costs, according to a study, which reveals that the most efficient speed is much lower than most people think"
Fuel prices: how to save £500 a year (even if it does mean driving at 20mph) - Times Online
"The average car consumes 38 per cent more fuel at 70mph than it does over the same distance at 50mph. At 60mph it uses 34 per cent more than at 40mph.
The average driver travelling at 90mph on a motorway will spend £1.20 more on fuel every eight minutes than a driver travelling at 70mph. The 90mph driver will have travelled farther in that time but will still be spending 40 per cent more per mile than the 70mph driver"

I am using a combination of driving slower and have started using my push bike to go to work, problem is with the push bike is that van drivers, X5's and artics are still in abundance.

I'd rather spend a bit extra and drive at 70 than have every tom, dick and harry in an HGV overtaking me. At 50mph your one of the slowest things on the motorway!
Plus its so Boooooooring!

I suspect thats all pretty much irrelevent actaully.
..since the average journey is pretty much stop/start- never even reaching 50 ..!!
so unless your in an electric go-cart you might as well forget about the figures

Christ (am I allowed to say that?)!!! If you do 50 on a motorway, you'll be crushed by every HGV ramming into you from behind.
On a more serious note, I can honestly say that the number of cars hacking along the outside lane has reduced considerably as has the average speed on dual cabbageways and motorways. It's quite nice not to have arrogant arseholes trying to barge past at every opportunity.

Time is money though so you have to factor that in.
If you drive faster you could be better off.
For example doing a 90 mile trip at 90mph = 1 hour travel time, according to your article above its an extra £1.20 every 8 minutes so £9 extra over the hour. If you travelled at 70 mph it would take you just over 17 minutes longer. If the 17 minutes were time that I could be using to earn money at say £45 an hour (average rate for a professional type, I get more than that obviously ) then 17 minutes = £12.75. So I'd have lost £3.75 by driving at 70 mph.
So 90 mph all the way for me Anyway the argument about driving a Subaru like a Granny would make you ghey was enough for me

Also if you travel at 30 or less, it can of course use more petrol than cruising at a sensible higher speed. And it goes without saying that the really higher speeds are also going to use more.
I think it is not beyond reason that it won't be long before there will be a genuine shortage of fuel let alone its cost shooting considerably higher and even the dyed in the wool speedsters will be forced to knock it off jt to be able to use their cars at all!
Does the word "ghey" have a different meaning to the word "gay"? Is it just a fashionable way of saying it? If it is the same why not use the original word anyway. Gay is a misappropriated way of saying Homosexual after all"!

No the webmaster deemed that using the word gay in a derogatory fashion was not PC and homophobic so declared that it wasn't to be used as an insult on SNet any more. Hence we came up with ghey instead That way he won't find it while searching the forum for gay references to vape. Don't tell him though
