Guitar playing tips for newbie.
I've recently started to play the electric guitar to serenade my beloved Brenda. Any useful tips/hints, websites etc, would be appreciated

For a start, I'd learn to play an acoustic first (if you haven't done already)
It will toughen up your hands and fingers and teach you all about correct fingering (ooh err), tone etc
Not a good idea IMHO to learn on an electric if you are serious about learning to play properly
If you do want to 'really learn' then either get lessons or by following this excellent series (covers many styles)
Amazon.co.uk: Peter J. Finlay - The Complete Fingerstyle Guitarist - Six Guitar Lessons - Series One : Complete Beginner: Peter J. Finlay: Video
Good luck (especially to Brenda)

Mr Lock - She's stone deaf anyway, but I have bought a BIG marshall amp that could wake the dead
Mr Sipie - I am serious, but being 69 years of age, my fingers are not as dexterous as they once were, aided with a mild case of arthritis, it's probably not the easiest or best instrument to learn at my time of life. But I am enthused and focussed as it's been on my 'to-do-list' for many years.
More info welcome guys...

dont put the guitar away, leave it on view on a stand, so you will notice it and pick it up every spare minute you have. (out of sight, out of mind)
oh and deffo worth having lessons!! and some simple beginners books.

I learned on an electric though(for the most part) Taught myself for the first 6 months or so with beginners books/videos - a great help by the way - then got a fantastic teacher, which is vital for learning the correct way to play without bad habits. With guitar playing, some habits you can pick up early actually make it easier to progress early on, and play things you didnt think were possible...but they will hamper your progression when it comes to playing more advanced pieces(double picking is a perfect example of this - picking down and up, rather than just with down strokes).
So to sum up...books will help alot to start with, especially with chords, as many even have diagrams labelled with the correct fingerings to use.
A teacher is really a must though.
Hope that helps, Alan

Please remember this is a wind up thread.
Annoying really for people actually taking the time to try and offer advice

Ok gentlemen, I've been learning some basic chords, but find them quite boring to learn to be honest. On further research I have come across 'Tablature' and basic songs like Smoke On The Water seem to be within my ability.
Now I've just looked up Stairway To Heaven and need some help.

On the first set of notes how are the 5th [D-6] and 6th [E-7] notes played?
I think I'm trying to run before I can walk!
Thanks
Cyril.

Why don't you try some east peasy stuff like this
YouTube - DragonForce - Through the Fire and Flames
(note solo after about 3.40 mins)
and then move onto some proper playing
(and stop wasting our time please)

Mr Lock - I am not wasting YOUR time whatsoever. I cannot control your actions, you're the one hitting the reply button. And how many times have you replied to this thread?
No matter how much you deny it Mr Lock, you are drawn to me...you just can't help yourself.
Now stop following me around like some demented terrier and with respect, I politely ask you not to respond from here on in.
Cyril.
