Upright vacuum cleaner buying advice
I know, I know: not the coolest thread ever posted on here, but we've had saucepans recently so I'll give it a go.
I have about a 15 year old Samsung upright bagged vacuum cleaner. It is now fast approaching the end of its useful life (there are only so many bits that can fall off it!). I want something similar to replace it, so we bought an Electrolux upright bagless jobbie from Argos on Saturday. What a heap of ill-designed junk! The suction hose would pop out of its lower socket every few seconds and flail around uselessly. Furthermore the spent air is blasted out of two exhaust vents low down at the FRONT of the machine meaning that all the dust and dirt on a hard floor (laminate or tiled) that you want to suck up, just gets blown up and away into all 4 corners of the room and onto your furniture before you can even reach it with the vac!
The old Samsung one has this vent half way up the machine on the SIDE, which simply prevents this problem. Looking through the Argos catalogue, it appears that this front exhaust system is commonplace amongst current vacuum cleaners. This seems completely mental to me. Does anyone know of a machine currently on sale for less than 100 quid that has the side exhaust?
One final point regarding the (now returned) Electrolux one: it was as loud as a hovering Harrier Jump Jet display and made both our kids cry! Are they all that bad these days? I don't need mega power (no cat or dog hairs in our house!): I just want one that works, doesn't frighten the kids and has a 7 metre cable. Any advice would be welcome.

I bought a s/h Dyson the other day at the Totnes flea market. Cost £20 which is mindbendingly cheap, but it really does work well, its bagless of course and pick up everything going. That is for a s/h one so a new one would be a good bet if you are prepared to pay their price which is expensive.

we have just bought a bagless 'Hoover' one, to me it seems fine but my other half says its not as good as our old one. the previous one was made by 'vax' but again a bagless type, however, really noisy, apparently because the motor is mounted differently according to the hoover shop man.

Panasonic, £69.00 will get you a simple but tidy machine.
I sell these, lots of them and have been doing so for years. Unlike most of the other makes I never get any back for repair.

I think dysons are quite good, they also come with a two year guarantee.
you can get one of these for £100 if you shop around in any store sales.
I dont like Dysons advert though ,where James dyson is slating the four wheeled vachuum cleaner and showing how to turn a cleaner with his ball version.
does that mean he will stop producing the standard one.

We've got two cleaners. A Dyson animal for the routine cleaning and for the days something more heavy duty is need also have a Kirby. Thats an amazing cleaner, lucky we didn't have to buy it as they are very expensive but gets so much more dirt out of the carpets compared to any other cleaner we have used before.

Dyson 'Animal' I think it's called. Sucks like nothing else we've had over 25 years. And very versatile with all it's extension bits etc. Expensive, but worth it for us (three dogs).
Richard.
PS Five year guarantee, from John Lewis
