Escort for Heroes.
Reproduced verbatim from another forum, but well worth posting here I think.
You may have seen the press coverage of hearses stuck in traffic, carrying the bodies of those KIA, and noticed how badly this compared with the reception in Canada and other NATO countries for similar casualties.
Sign the No 10 petition, and perhaps people will take notice.
Petition to: instruct the Ministry of Defence and Chief Constables to provide official escorts for the bodies of repatriated British servicemmen.
The wording of the petition is:
"The bodies of British servicemen and women killed overseas are flown to RAF Lyneham.
The hearses carrying the bodies receive no special escort once they leave the county of Wiltshire, normally bound for the mortuary at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.
It is an insult to these brave people and their families that their hearses should travel un-escorted on their journey through the country that these men and women served and died for.
The signatories to this petition request that the Ministry of Defence, in co-ordination with local Chief Constables, arrange for a formal escort for the bodies of all those Servicemen and women, unless the next-of-kin request otherwise."
I've signed.

I'm curious to see the route from RAF Lyneham to John Radcliffe Hospital. I'm fairly sure that most of the servicemen returning to Canada fly into an airbase in Trenton and then take the 401 into Toronto. This stretch has actually been renamed "'Highway of Heroes" because of it's use to transport the fallen to the mortuary in Toronto. My point being, it's a short trip on roads to the 401, a major motorway/highway, then it's into the downtown core. Regardless, it's an escorted journey so no real holdups.
It would be nice if the same thing did apply in the UK. It's not as if the chappies over here are Generals or sons/daughters of high ranking people, they are ordinary troops.
