Default Payroll Query

Last year my wife was overpaid for several months beacuse a sick form when she was off for two days had no end date.

Without warning, the payroll department took back the full amount in one hit, over £1100.

We raised this as an issue and they agreed they shouldn't have done it and offered to pay back the full amount - After that a repayment process could be agreed.

Checked the balance yesterday, and they had paid in £700.

Queried the low amount and have had the reponse:

It was correct (22% PAYE, 10% NI and 6% Pension) making a total deduction of £427.

This seems very high to me, I dug out an old payslip and compared it which shows I earned over £1600 before I had to pay a similar total deduction.

Am I right or have they made another error??

Why are you paying tax again?

If the £1100 was net then they need to repay £1100 net.

They took the £1100 before tax was applied

Looks about right to me, don't forget your personal allowance has been already used so is all taxable.
