MTB for the wife - £300 budget
As heading really. I've just finished paying for my bike through cycle scheme and going to do it again but want a bike for the wife. Can be over £300 but not much more as I want some goodies for my bike.
Don't know where to start to be honest. Lockable forks would be a big bonus but has to be MTB as we are doing forest treks this year.

I want a road wheel/tyre package for mine and lockable forks. Going to see if I can blag them onto this years scheme.

My wife has one of these : Carrera Kraken Review | BikeRadar.com
It's sturdy, fairly durable and has quite a reasonable spec for the price.

I have a Kraken, bit heavy and the cable discs wouldnt stop 16 stone of me hurtling down a hill, hence a dip in the Bollin and then a trip to the bike shop for some Mono Mini's and new disks, now when I stop it looks like an aborted takeoff on an A380's brakes. Frame is really good on the Kraken, dead stiff, forks were spongy so got replaced.

I just bought a specialized hardrock sport disk for myself from DE VER cycles for £300. Am pretty happy with it and Its seems like a decent bit of kit, they do wimmins frames aswell!

My other half has got this:
Marin Bolinas Ridge. Light frame. Only has V-brakes as standard (good enough for her style of riding to be honest) but the hubs, frame and forks have all the mounts etc. to fit disc brakes if needed at a later date.
Got it for £300.
She loves it.

My brother (who lives and breathes MTB's ... and recently changed his and his wife's bikes, from Specialised to Trek) got me onto Trek bikes... great all-rounders in terms of spec, build, weight etc.
Never been a fan of women's frames with massively sloping top-tubes too, makes well-specced bikes look somehow cheap IMHO.
