I have just come back from Goa where it's fare to say quite hot at the minute, which when flying back to the UK left me thinking.....

Why when the sun is so many millions of miles away is there such a variation in temprature across the globe. It is only 5k miles to Goa so why does 5k make so much difference given that the sun is millions of miles away...

I'm well aware it's quite dangerous for me to think to hard, but this has left me puzzled.

I know about the equater and stuff but still.....5k compared to many millions...

I have to ask....plus it's Friday

Isnt it to do with the direct rays because the earth is on an axis we dont see as many direct rays as what you would in India for example. Something like that anyway, I know what Im on about anyway, just cant think of how is best to explain it.

I know what you mean too. I couldn't explain it any better either, so decided not to try.

It's a very very complex subject, and indeed your latitutde and hemisphere and the time of year and direct rays make a lot of difference. Plus clouds, snow, vegitation, water......

basically its to do with the angle that the sun rays are hitting the earth at, obviously the earth is a globe so if u look side on you have a curved line,

o O

(thats the sun and the earth, capital being the sun, not to scale )

england being nearer the top of the globe isnt directly aimed at the sun where as goa will be more flatly aimed towards the sun. way to find it out (not that your sad enough or whatever) if you got a piece of glass or plastic, lay it down flat, then let it cool down then lay it down at an angle in the same place and the temperatures will be slightly different (in theory anyway)

duno if that makes sense though but i know what i mean and its the thought that counts
