M3/A303 will be a far more interesting route.
Used to do that every day whilst working on a project for the Army in deepest Wiltshire, past Thruxton and Stonehenge.....

I'm heading to Bristol next week from a secret location somewhere in the middle of the UK.... feckin HATE it, mind numbingly boring 4 - 5 hour drive.... and when you finally get there they all talk funny as well

When I used to travel to Reading almost everyday, the M3 was always quicker than the M4 (mainly because J12 -> J15 of the M25 is usually stuffed). So I would go on the M3 as Google suggests (from: maidstone to: devizes - Google Maps)

The difference in mileage is 3 miles between the M3/A303 and M4 routes. You still have to come off the M4 at J14 and shoot through Hungerford , then Marlborough and to Devizes so I dont actually think there will be much in it.

Went the A303 route and did it in just under 2 hours having left at 06.40. The A360 off past Stone Henge was an absolute cracking road with no traffic on it apart from some Scorpion tanks crossing over it in places.
Glad I went early as on the way back the M25 was a car park compared to when I went on it Thanks for the replies.
