Gran Canaria
Yo dudes
Grp of 4 of us fancy gran canaria but none have been before
I lke the sound of masapolas (spelling) and others fancy puerto rico
Anyone been before and can recommmend places to stay?
Prefer hotels with sports amenities and such
taaaa!

have a look at peurto morgan, only a few miles away and much much nicer in my opinion.

Puerto is a far tighter nit affair than Maspolomas or Playa. If you are only interested in getting pissed and getting laid then your first choice should be Playa followed by Puerto Rico. Maspolomas is literally 3 euro's in a taxi away from playa but has nicer beaches (sand dunes), much less rif-raff and at the Melonares (sp?) part designer shops and fancy (but reasonable) places to eat. Staying in Maspolomas offers the best overall compromise IMHO with plenty to do and see, loads of entertainment on your doorstep and if you want the full on nightlife of Playa then it's literally a mile or so away.
As I said, if you plan to spend 7pm-6am wasted and humping, 1pm-6pm by the pool and 6-7 getting ready for the next night then get the cheapest and most central accommodation you can in playa or PR. Maspolomas has lots of golf courses btw.

I've been to Maspalomos with the g friend a couple of years ago, and although it's a nice place it's small, and geared up more for zee Gearmans, all German food in the shops etc etc.
Oh and don't go venturing into the sand dunes as it's full of naked people

i have been to Puerto Rico it is basically all at the bottom of a vast valley and the hotels are situated around the sides with the beach at the end.
very nice place with playa des ingles not too far away.
loads of food places, bars and entertainment.

Maspalomas is nice and quiet and its a cheap taxi ride into the party zones. Id recommend it anyway, nice place. the Princess hotels are well worth a look, great food and facilities

I went last year and I thought it sucked personally. Everything felt like it was from some 80's movie (what's that bette midler movie where she's some singer?). Very dated feel IMO. Full of Swedes if that's your thing 
We stayed in Maspalomas, but we went to puerto rico for a fishing trip, and puerto rico definitely seems a lot nicer.

Worst holiday I've ever had, got a last minute cheapy to Puerto Rico a few weeks before Christmas.
The place we stayed had the apartments situated around a pool, would have been ok in itself except it's chav central. Kids shouting and screaming in the pool from 7am until sunset, scumbag families could give a toss about the rest of us who where there to relax. Especially when I'm trying to sleep of a hangover
. Big concrete commercial centre full of bars, restaurants, shops and amusement arcades, ******* horrible. Many more chavs about.
Highlight of the holiday was the two old dears in the apartment next to ours getting burgled in the middle of the night, they suspected it was the scumbag family that was ruining the place. The bloke had been checking things out the night before on the premise that he needed some bottled water as they'd run out. Whilst asking them for some he had a snoop round and figured out where they kept there valuable stuff.
