Default Using the internet to find info on WW2 Relatives

My Grandparents were around during WW2 and both my Grandfathers were in the forces during this time. I have found out bits and pieces relating to one of them who flew Lancasters, but my other Grandfather (who was involved with tanks) seems to be untraceable. Could it be that as there were millions of people involved in both the world wars that not all of them get mentioned, or would there be a web site some where relating to the particular corps he was in. All I know is that he was in the 8th Army, was in a tank, was at El Alemein and was the spitting image of Monty (not Python)

He was in 626 squadron Colin. I managed to find mission logs that his captain wrote about some of their raids which had details such as bomb payload, weather conditions, resistance encountered etc. He survived the war and went on to have a well paid job in banking (First National City Bank) He used to be able to get us in the pits at the F1 Grand Prix because they sponsored one of the teams. Shame I was so young at the time because I bet he could have told a few stories and by the time I was old enough to have appreciated listening to his exploits he had passed away.

*sigh* I'm a GIRL!!

The British Genealogy Site has a particular section for WW2 queries. As I said earlier, the members are really helpful and they will do 'look ups' for you. Another place to try would be the National Archive website.

The National Archives | DocumentsOnline | Welcome

If you need any more help, let me know (even if you did think I was a bloke! )

Both my Gandads survived the war, which I'm guessing is quite lucky. The one who was in the tanks was pretty screwed up after El Alemein. It was very harrowing from what my Nan told me

Think im going to have a go with that National Archives site.

There is a match for a medal card from one of my relations that was in the Northumberland Fusiliers during WW1. Be interesting too see what he was awarded.

Also found another match, some one with the same surname, a Second Lieutenant in the Queen's Royal West Surrey is mentioned in a WW1 prisoner of war interview.

I have a fairly uncommon surname so will no doubt be related somewhere too him.

I sent off to Glasgow for my Grandfathers service records. The general idea is that it takes about 6 weeks before you get them, but it should be quite detailed.

I was wondering if you had started yet. Don't forget the British Genealogy website forums. Might see you in there!

I downloaded the form from thier website, posted it up to my Mum who then got a photocopy of my grandads death certificate and my dear old Nan (100 this year) signed the completed form and my Mum sent it on to Glasgow.

Although my Nan is nearing 100 she still has all her marbles and a fantasic memory to go with it. She can recall things from 60 years ago as if it were yesterday, whereas I think about something that happened yesterday and it seems like eons ago!!

Do you have the same username on British Genealogy as you do on here oldsplice? (female)

Yes, I do

Get as much info as you can now from your nan, because once you start, it sucks you in and you'll want to know more. Sometimes I give my **** an 'eadache trying to work stuff out!

I've got a subscription with Ancestry.co.uk, so if there's anything I can help you with, let me know. It gives me access to Census returns from 1841-1901, and Birth Marriage and Death Indexes from 1837.
