..almost as good as the judge saying that he *might* have to jail Steve Wright (Ipswich Prostitute murderer) for life. As it is, he is going to die in jail; but the suggestion that there could have been a lesser alternative seemed pretty odd to me. Just a shame he's not going to the gallows.

I wonder what kind of non custodial sentences he means which have a better record as far as re-offending is concerned? Would that be those community type sentences where they don't even bother to turn up and nothing is done about it?
They really are clutching at straws to try and cover up their gross irresponsibilty over prison places over the last 10-11 years and of course as ever will tell us that crime figures are down anyway!
They really have shown that they have no concern whatsoever over the safety of the general public which of course is one of their prime duties.
The pun was not intended!

I have no problem with a non-custodial sentence, as long as it follows on from a custodial one. In otherwords, do 12 months solitary in prison to let you consider what you've done then spend another 12 months doing community service to put something back in to the community. Get caught doing the same crime again and the sentence is doubled.

Build more sodding jails. Why do we waste lives and billions on pounds fighting some war that is not even our own when we cannot house the scum that roam our streets.
Its about time to get our priorities in order.

Or do what one guy has done in the US. Build a jail like an army camp but surrounded by high fences and barbed wire. With tents to sleep in. All year round.
Can't remember where exactly but it sounded like a cracking ideas to me. The middle of Dartmoor would be a good place!
