Default James May on Al Murray's Happy Hour

Brilliant! I've always appreciated his sense of humour on Top Gear but he excelled himself with the discourse on the Merlin engine with Al Murray tonight.

Repeated tomorrow night if memory serves...

I used to not appreciate Al Murray and latterly Russell Brand but I now think both are very, very clever. All hail to the ale

I wouldn't want to change your opinion gazza-uk, but I really did not like either Al Murray or Russell Brand at all. With regard to Al Murray I always saw the start of his shows as a really offensive xenophobic anglo-saxon racist rant against the French and the rest of the world. Now I just see it as a ****-take of the English culture and a ****-take on the racists. Maybe I'm wrong but viewing it this way makes it funny. Russell Brand is another matter as I'm only just warming to him after many months of switching off...I think his guest appearances have done a lot to make me warm to him...we'll see!

I presume you've seen his wine adventure programs with Oz Clark?

Certainly not for intelligence!!

May was highly entertaining, and still demonstrates how little "show biz" has affected him (compared to Hamster and Clarkson)

May is a phenomenally clever and articulate chap. I recall he was a journalist writing for Autocar and Complete Car way back in the early nineties, around the same time as Clarkson was at Performance Car.

Gazza, you should check out Murray's 'Giving It Both Barrels'

Very cleverly written and superbly articulated.

The Pub Landlord and Captain Slow, most definitely uo there on any Greatest Living Englishmen table, along with Boris Johnson

One of the best programmes on TV in recent times. Excellent rapport between the two, Oz is FOUL in the mornings when he's nursing a bad head

Best watched while guzzling a bottle of strong red
