Default Sky + question

Just had the thing done yesterday.... but

It stinks Phew

it seems to run very hot, is this normal? we have moved it to another shelf with even more clearance, but still we get a horrible hot electronics smell

is this just the unit bedding in, or is it slowly cooking?

Sounds like it has issues, dont remember any burning smells when mine was installed.
Has a bit of ventilation all round.

I would keep a good eye on that, if not call Sky and raise your concerns and stop using it for the time being.
Daft question, but is it near dust etc? Definatly the box that smells?

They do get warm and are renowned for being quite noisy, but not the burning bit.

Hmmm, it would seem we have the opposite....very quiet, but smelly, its more akin to when you have component failure, you get that dry hot smell.

It went back into the original space where the sky box was, so we've moved it now to see if that had anything to do with it....although you would have thought that the installer would have said if the location was unsuitable

Maybe the cooling fan on it isn't running; that's what makes the noise on mine (though it doesn't really make a lot).

Got one in the bedroom and it wakes me up at 5.55am precisely every morning, better than an alarm clock, i have to unplug it, if i don't want to be woken at 5.55am.

mine is the same, had it installed on thursday and can smell the hot electric smell. i presume it's just the unit being used and will die down eventually.

Ours never gets hot or smells of elcetrical type smells (it sits beneath our DVD player). I would call sky in to look at it if it was me.

You'll probably find it's a re-conditioned unit, someone else complained about it, sky changed it took it back to be checked over and then sent it to out again.

We've had 3 units in 24 months, 2 in the first 12 months, but never one for a burning smell, just the screen freezing while recording etc.
I think it's a ploy to make you take out the £10 a month extended warranty

Sky dont install Recon units on ANY 'New ' installs.. its a sackable offence, ffs!! if yours is a new unit and goes faulty within 90 days, you can have it replaced with a NEW unit .. if its older than that, will be replaced with an 'A Grade' (recon) unit..
if its a Component burning smell get sky out to check it/change as necessary.. they wont mind.

Had ours fitted this morning, had a very slight burning smell when it was first switched on, it's fine now.
